Hollywood is still trying to process the shock and disbelief after the violent deaths of legendary filmmaker, Rob Reiner, and his wife, photographer and film producer, Michele Singer Reiner. The tragedy took an even shocking turn when the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, appeared in a Los Angeles court with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths. While industry insiders, media, and fans are expressing their grief over the incident, here's what happened during Nick Reiner's first court hearing.
Nick Reiner made his first court appearance on December 17, 2025, over the accusations of killing his parents at their Brentwood home. According to the Associated Press, Nick appeared from behind glass in a custody area, shackled and wearing a padded suicide-prevention smock. He did not enter a plea during the brief hearing. At the request of his attorney, Alan Jackson, the arraignment was postponed until January 7, 2026. Rob's custody has been extended without bail.

Prosecutors have charged Nick Reiner with two counts of first-degree murder along with special-circumstance allegations. These charges have significantly increased the severity of any potential sentence. Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, said during a press conference that his official has not decided on whether it will ask for the death penalty or the case will proceed to trial.

Nick Reiner's siblings, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, expressed their grief over the loss of their parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner. They issued a family statement through their spokesperson, who told leading outlets, such as TMZ, that they are experiencing a painful situation within the family. They described both Rob and Michele were more like their 'best friends' than parents. Reiner has sought privacy from the media as the investigation into the case continues. In their words:
