New 'Stargate' Reboot Ordered By Amazon, To Be Produced By 'Blindspot' Creator, Martin Gero

Fans of the Stargate franchise are a dime a dozen. If you are one of them, we are here to deliver good news. Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit a reboot for the beloved sci-fi franchise. From the creative team behind the new show to what you can expect from it, and where you can stream it, we have got all the latest updates for you.

The creative team behind Amazon's Stargate

Amazon has brought back Martin Gero, who has worked as a writer and producer on the three previous live-action Stargate shows. He is not only a Stargate veteran, but you might also recognise him for his work as a showrunner and creator of NBC's Blindspot. For the upcoming Amazon reboot, Gero will serve as creator, executive producer and showrunner. Other executive producers alongside him include Joby Harold and Tony Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, both of whom co-wrote the original 1994 Stargate film. Brad Weight and Joe Mallozi, longtime creative heads within the Stargate TV universe, will also serve as consulting producers for the new reboot. Expressing his excitement for the project, showrunner, Gero claimed:

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on 'Stargate: Atlantis'. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. 'Stargate' taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you.  And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

More details on Stargate

The beloved sci-fi franchise began in 1994 with the release of Stargate as a feature film. It was written by Dean Devlin and Ronald Emmerich, with the latter also serving as the film's director. The franchise spawned over three series — Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. Following this, they released two direct-to-DVD feature films, a short-lived animated show called Stargate Infinity, and a 2018 web series titled Stargate Origins. Amazon's new Stargate show will be the first TV series in the franchise following the conclusion of Stargate Universe in 2011. Regarding the reboot, Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD TV development at Amazon MGM Studios, stated:

“'Stargate' is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honoured to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honours the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”

What is the premise of the Stargate franchise?

For those unversed, the premise of Stargate is brilliantly simple yet infinitely expandable. 'Stargates' are essentially ancient alien devices that allow one to create wormholes between planets, enabling near-instantaneous travel across the galaxy. Following the discovery of ‘Stargates’ and learning how to operate them, humans formed specialised military teams to explore thousands of worlds. This opened them up to both the wonders and dangers that lie hidden among the stars.

Stargate

Stargate masterfully blends military action with ancient mythology and modern science, making it completely unique and setting it apart from other sci-fi franchises. The series also reimagines gods from Earth's ancient civilisations as technologically advanced aliens, who, after visiting our planet, took it upon themselves to shape human development.
