Moreover, the investigators are trying to understand the source of the unknown DNA recovered inside her home. Law enforcement sources have indicated that this evidence has not provided any leads for them. Will the FBI take over Nancy Guthrie's case?

Under increasing pressure, there have been more questions about whether the FBI will take over the investigation from Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos. According to reports by the New York Post, some federal law enforcement sources suggested that the FBI is keen to play a larger role in the investigation. However, as of now, the FBI has not officially taken control of the case. Instead, they are working with the local authorities.

In turn, the Pima County Sheriff's Department remains the lead investigative body. Sheriff, Chris Nanos has publicly addressed concerns about how the case is being handled and confirmed that they have not reduced their resources to find Nancy. The department confirmed that 300 and 400 personnel remain assigned to the investigation. Despite speculation, there has been no official announcement that the FBI will fully take over.

How much time does the sheriff say the search could take?

Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos admitted that solving the Nancy Guthrie case may take time. According to Hindustan Times, he stated that locating Nancy could take "weeks or months or years," highlighting that the investigations of this nature are unpredictable. Further, he explained that the same could potentially resolve in "an hour from now," reflecting its unpredictability. Meanwhile, the authorities have requested that residents within a two-mile radius of Nancy's home submit any unusual security footage recorded between January 1 and February 2, 2026. The sheriff has also asked private volunteer search groups to stand down to allow professionals to work without interference.

Nancy Guthrie was first reported missing on February 1, 2026. Investigators believe she was kidnapped from her home after surveillance footage captured a masked, armed man at her door around 1:47 a.m. the authorities have described that the suspect seems to be a male of approximately 5'9" to 5'10" tall. He wore black gloves and carried a hiking pack. Likewise, some ransom demands have surfaced, asking for millions in Bitcoin. Although the authorities confirmed that at least one ransom communication was fake, leading to the sender's arrest, other messages remain under investigation.
