The unexpected passing of Marshawn Kneeland at 24 has left the football world devastated. The Dallas Cowboys star was one of the most promising new talents who had just scored his NFL career’s first touchdown on November 3, 2025, days before his tragic death on November 6, 2025. The second-year NFL player was reportedly found dead from a gunshot wound, which is believed to be self-inflicted. With the curiosity rising about what really happened to Kneeland in those final hours, authorities have revealed some new details about his death.
Previous reports stated that Kneeland had been involved in a police chase in the hours leading up to his death, after his car crashed with a vehicle. And now, The Dallas Morning News has revealed that his body was discovered inside a portable restroom, just a short distance from where his vehicle had crashed in the southbound lanes of the Dallas Parkway and only minutes from The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ headquarters.

Kneeland was found in the early hours of November 6, near Network Boulevard and Gaylord Parkway in Frisco, Texas. Roughly three hours earlier, the Michigan native had gotten involved in a police chase. PEOPLE reported that Texas DPS troopers attempted to stop Kneeland, but he refused to pull over, eventually crashing into a pickup truck near the Dallas Tollway access lanes. The driver of the pickup was not injured. Upon finding the abandoned vehicle, the authorities alerted multiple North Texas agencies about Kneelands’ distressed state.

According to a police dispatch audio, Kneeland had sent a ‘goodbye’ text to his loved ones while suffering an “apparent medical episode”. His girlfriend, Catalina, also contacted police, warning that he was armed and had a history of mental illness. According to TMZ Sports, authorities received a distress call late on November 5, 2025, from Catalina, who told police that she feared he might “end it all”. Further, Catalina reportedly contacted his agent and the Cowboys organization, urging an immediate search for him.

Kneeland’s final Instagram post, shared on October 9, 2025, just three weeks before his death, showed a carousel of Cowboys action shots as he reflected on his growth as a player. Fans now believe the post hinted at how deeply he missed his late mother, Wendy, who died from an overdose two years earlier. He had worn a small urn of her ashes on a chain around his neck ever since.

In another post from January 21, 2025, Kneeland referenced the anime Cyberpunk, comparing his emotions to a character fulfilling his mother’s dream. Looking back, fans say his messages reveal how heavily her absence weighed on him. In March 2024, Kneeland reportedly spoke at her wake, saying:
“Growing up, she was always there for me, always going to all my games… She would always help me with just life in general. She was basically there for me for everything. If I could go back in time, I would have definitely found a way for me to go see her... It tore me apart… I can feel her presence there with me... I know she’s still watching over me. I try to be strong, as much as I can.”

Marshawn Kneeland’s journey to the NFL was a true rising-star story. Born in 2001, he attended Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan, where he played both linebacker and tight end. His standout senior season, with 110 tackles, eight sacks, and 20 receptions for 330 yards, earned him a spot at Western Michigan University.
From 2019 to 2023, Kneeland emerged as one of the program’s top defensive players with 149 tackles, leading to his selection by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Only eighteen months into his NFL career, his tragic death has left the industry in shock.
As the Dallas Cowboys return to the field, the heartbroken team has organized several tributes to honor Kneeland’s legacy. For the remainder of the 2025 season, players will wear custom helmet decals designed by teammates to reflect his spirit. They will also wear special tribute T-shirts during warmups for the Week 11 game against the Raiders and the following home game against the Eagles.
A video tribute and moment of silence will be held in Kneeland’s memory on November 23, 2025, with the NFL star’s family and girlfriend expected to attend.
