Twitter called out a magazine for using a deceased domestic victim's picture for its cover while slamming her name indirectly.

We live in a world where the dowry system is quite prevalent. Even after being illegal, its existence cannot be denied. The recent case of SV Vismaya’s death, which has shocked the entire state of Kerala, is the perfect example of the same. Domestic abuse and torture in the name of dowry is not uncommon, but Vismaya’s death has only showed us the gravity of the situation.

On June 22, 2021, 24-year-old Vismaya, a final year student of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, was found dead at her in-laws’ house in Kollam, Kerala. Her body was found hanging in the house. Her family members have accused her husband, Kirankumar and his family of assault and domestic violence in the name of dowry. Vismaya’s death has started a widespread protest, where her friends and family are seeking justice for her.

Amid the course of the investigation, Manorama magazine’s online edition used her picture on its cover and indirectly bashed her name with the title in Malayalam, ‘Let there be no bewilderments’. The victim’s name was Vismaya, which means bewilderment. However, Manorama’s act didn’t go too well with netizens, who mercilessly trolled the magazine for being insensitive. Vismaya died a few days after sending messages to her cousin revealing that she was subjected to brutal domestic violence by her husband, Kirankumar, an official at the Motor Vehicle Department. Vismaya’s death has sparked outrage in Kerala. Vismaya’s WhatsApp chats has revealed that Kiran did not like the car, given as a part of dowry by her father on their wedding.

Vismaya’s father, Trivikraman Nair had told the media that his daughter was tortured mercilessly by Kiran and his family, demanding more money. He had said, “At the time of marriage, I had given 100 sovereigns of gold, 1.20 acres of land and a new car. However, he was torturing my daughter, demanding more money. As the car, which was gifted to the couple, was bought after availing a loan, I could not meet his demand for more money.”

Talking about the car he had gifted to his daughter, Trivikraman had shared, “Trivikraman said he had gifted a new car worth Rs 11 lakh. But Kiran used to harass my daughter saying that that car does not fit for his status. He wanted the car to be sold and the money given to him.”

Meanwhile, as per the latest reports, Kirankumar had confessed to manhandling Vismaya multiple times.
