Netflix's 'Kurukshetra' Review, Gulzar's Voiceover Stands Out In The Uneven Animation Of Mahabharata

Every generation has found its own way to revisit old tales and in India, no story is told more than the epic Mahabharata. Netflix continued that tradition with Kurukshetra, which is a bold animated retelling of the great epic. For a while, the show was generating a lot of buzz and finally the wait is over, as the show is out on Netflix. Read on to know if Kurukshetra is worth watching or not.

Plot of the series, Kurukshetra

Kurukshetra premiered on October 10, 2025, on Netflix. The series is an animated version of Mahabharata's great war, which has 18 episodes, split into two parts. The simple idea of this show was to tell the story of 18 days of the Kurukshetra war through the eyes of 18 different warriors. Each episode focuses on one warrior’s viewpoint before and during the war, which gives a better understanding of the war to the audience.

Part 1 of the show opens in 'Matsya's' kingdom, where 'Arjuna's' son, 'Abhimanyu' is about to marry Princess 'Uttara', but the threat of war is evident at all times. Soon, the show moves into the battlefield and shows the first few important days of fighting. The Part 1 of Kurukshetra acts as a buildup for Part 2, as it shows initial things like 'Krishna' teaching the Bhagavad Gita to 'Arjuna', the appointment of 'Dronacharya' as the 'Kaurava' commander after 'Bhishma's' fall and the killing of 'Abhimanyu'.

What works in the series, Kurukshetra and what doesn’t

The best part about Netflix's Kurukshetra is Gulzar's powerful narration. His lines about dharma and inner battle set a thoughtful mood that the animation often supports. Many viewers felt that Gulzar's voice was the highlight of the show. Another thing that works is the new idea to show Mahabharata through the eyes of 18 warriors. This makes the known epic feel more personal and dives deeper into moral dilemmas.

Despite some good highlights, the show doesn't perform exceedingly well because even though, Gulzar's voice stands out, several other voiceovers feel flat. Viewers might feel that not all actors deliver the emotional range the scripts need, which weakens smaller character moments. This makes some scenes feel hollow. Another thing that is lacking in Part 1 is that some important characters like 'Bhishma' or 'Dronacharya' lack depth.
