Netflix’s A Man on the Inside has been a hit with viewers ever since it was first released a year ago, on November 21, 2024. Owing to its tremendous popularity, the show premiered its second season on November 20, 2025, where actor, Ted Danson reprises his role as the beloved character, ‘Charles Nieuwendyk’. The new season has given viewers plenty to discuss about, especially his daughter, ‘Emily’s’ journey to become a therapist, and Charles’s relationship with his love interest, ‘Mona’. For those who haven’t caught up with the show yet and are planning to give it a watch, here’s what happens in season 2 of A Man on the Inside and its ending explained.
‘Charles Nieuwendyk’, our favourite and effortlessly silly yet formidable sleuth, is back to solve another new case after wrapping up ‘The Pacific View Retirement Case’ in season 1. Coming to the new season, ‘Charles’ can be seen heading to Wheeler College, where 'President Jack Berenger’, played by actor, Max Greenfield, has had his laptop stolen out of nowhere while he is trying to get a $400 million donation from ‘Brad Vinick’, a Wheeler College alum. This is not all, as someone is also blackmailing Jack, threatening not only to toss out his laptop containing important information but also to reveal all of ‘Jack’s’ secrets and diminish his chances of securing the large donation.

After being hired to solve the case of the missing laptop alongside private investigator ‘Julie’, they decide that the best way to investigate their suspects would be for ‘Charles’ to go undercover in Wheeler College as a visiting professor. It is here that ‘Charles’ meets ‘Mona Margadoff’, the college’s music professor, and one of the individuals on his suspect list. Most viewers might not be aware of this, but ‘Mona’s’ character is actually played by his real-life wife, Mary Steenburgen. Apart from ‘Mona’, some of the other teachers in his list of suspects include ‘Elizabeth Muki’ (Linda Park), ‘Dr. Benjamin Cole’ (David Strathairn) and ‘Holly Bodgemark’ (Jill Talley). As the season plays out, ‘Charles’ discovers secrets about all the faculty members, even ‘Jack’, the one who hired him.

During the finale of the show, ‘Charles’ theorises that the mystery of the stolen laptop is ‘Jack’s’ own doing. This is because if ‘Jack’ actually accepted the large donation sum from ‘Brad’, he would be allowing the college to undergo multiple major changes. ‘Charles’s’ suspicion towards ‘Jack’ only fades when ‘Jack’ vehemently refuses the allegations of him being the culprit, and another faculty member suddenly comes forward and confesses to the crime.

While the case appears to be solved on the surface, as 'Professor Cole' also brings proof of his stealing the laptop after having overheard ‘Brad's’ plan to restructure the college, it is only after ‘Cole’s’ resignation that ‘Charles’ realised that ‘Cole’ was not the true mastermind. It is only after a conversation with ‘Holly’ that ‘Charles’ realizes that it was she and not ‘Cole’ who overheard ‘Brad’s’ conversation and devised the plan to steal the laptop, all while looping the other department heads into her plan. Thankfully for ‘Holly’, he decided not to turn her in, considering the best interests of the college. Later, during a meeting with the board of trustees, ‘Brad’s’ proposal is rejected after his and ‘Jack's’ secret contract gets leaked by the college newspaper.
