Sunil Dutt Kept His Promise To Wife, Nargis, Gave Her A Burial Despite The Backlash, 'Her Desire..'

Nargis Dutt was one of the finest actresses in the history of film industry. The actress paved the way for the future heroines with her impeccable acting skills, making her passing one of the most grievous days in Bollywood. However, her demise was not spared controversy, as her last rites became a topic of discussion at the time. 

Sunil Dutt faced severe backlash for fulfilling Nargis Dutt's wish to be buried

Nargis Dutt passed away a few days before her son, Sanjay Dutt made his Bollywood debut in 1981. The actress was battling cancer and was extremely excited to see her son on the big screen in Rocky. However, she lost the battle to cancer, and her seat remained empty on the day of the film's release. Now, her daughter, Priya Dutt has opened up about her last wish and how her father, Sunil Dutt faced pushback for fulfilling it.

During a conversation with Vickey Lalwani, Priya Dutt revealed that her mother, Nargis underwent seven surgeries in a single week in the United States. She added that the doctors had warned her father, Sunil Dutt that Nargis might not survive the procedures but she came through and later insisted on returning to India. Priya revealed how Nargis during the anniversary prior to her death had remarked that she won't be there for the next one. 

The politician further spoke about Nargis' funeral and revealed how her father, Sunil Dutt had to face pushback from several people for not cremating her. However, her mother had insisted on being buried, and Sunil made sure to fulfil her last wish. She recalled that her father told everyone that Nargis wanted the burial and they will do what she wanted. She was quoted as saying:

"Her funeral was a very surreal kind of a scene. My father, of course, had priests from all over who came and prayed for her. He said, 'Many people told me that she was married to a Hindu, so she should have a Hindu funeral'. But he said, 'No, it was her desire to be buried, and we will do everything according to her wishes.'" 

Priya Dutt opened up about Sanjay Dutt's debut in Rocky and their mother's absence

In the same interview, Priya revealed that their mother, Nargis passed away not too long after her return from the United States, merely four days before Sanjay Dutt's debut film, Rocky was released. She added that Sanjay was heartbroken because Nargis had assured him that she would be there even if she has to be rolled in on a stretcher. However, to honour her, they left the seat next to Sunil Dutt empty. She stated:

"It was extremely hard on Sanjay that she wasn’t there to see his first film, and to see his career take off. Rocky’s premiere happened, and we kept a seat next to Papa, empty, for mom."

Priya Dutt opened up about Nargis Dutt's passing and her funeral

In the same conversation, Priya Dutt revealed that her mother, Nargis wanted to be buried in her family burial ground, next to her mother. She shared that her father, Sunil took the mud from her grave to Haridwar as well. Priya also recalled her conversation with a media personnel after her mother's death and stated:

"When we brought her body home, there was all this press, and one person asked me how I was feeling. I must’ve said something, because Papa took us to a room and told us that if we want to cry and scream, we should do it with him, but outside, we must maintain our composure."

Priya Dutt revealed Sunil Dutt was a 'broken man' after Nargis' death

Priya Dutt also revealed that her father, Sunil Dutt, was deeply broken after Nargis' passing. He would have difficulty with the most basic tasks. She recalled that Sunil would wake up middle of the night and sit beside Nargis' grave. However, he snapped out of his grief once he realised he had three kids to look after, especially his son, Sanjay, who was at the time struggling with his drug addiction.
