Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming magnum opus, the Ramayana duology, stirred massive buzz with the launch of its first glimpse a few days ago. The two-part film, starring Ranbir Kapoor as ‘Lord Ram’ and Yash as ‘Ravan’, is already being touted as the biggest-ever project in India with a sky-high budget. While different sources had earlier reported various rough estimates about the film's massive budget, producer Namit Malhotra has now clarified the whopping cost of the two parts combined, and it's even greater than originally expected.
In his recent appearance on YouTuber Prakhar Gupta's podcast, Namit Malhotra talked about his extremely ambitious and epic project, Ramayana. The producer shared how the project’s budget exceeds even the biggest Indian films made so far by miles, revealing that the exact amount of its two parts combined will be around 500 million US dollars, which roughly translates to Rs. 4000 crores! He was quoted as saying:
“Budget-wise, it was like…everybody thought I'm a lunatic because no Indian film by a long distance comes close to it. To put it simply, it will be like 500 million dollars by the time we are done on both films put together- Part One and Part Two, which is over Rs 4000 crores.”
Namit Malhotra’s revelation of the budget far exceeds the prior estimates of Ramayana: Parts 1 and 2, i.e., Rs. 2000 crore. He also clarified that the project is completely made from their own funds. The mythological epic project is co-funded by Namit and Yash, and the latter also stars as ‘Ravan’ in the film. Speaking about the whopping budget, Namit shared his vision of making Ramayana the ‘largest film in the world’, adding that it’s still cheaper than some of the biggest Hollywood films. Namit stated:
“I say it like we are making the largest film in the world for the greatest story, the greatest epic that the world should see… And I still think it's cheaper than some of the big Hollywood films. So I think we're making a bigger film at a lower cost. For me, it's not a money-driven thing, honestly.”
Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana, featuring a star-studded cast, officially becomes the biggest-ever project of Indian cinema with its whopping budget. The film now officially joins the list of the costliest duologies in the world, surpassing Dune: Parts 1 and 2, The Matrix: 2 and 3, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2 (around USD 275 million).
Speaking about the massive budget, Namit revealed that Ramayana isn't driven by money, but by purpose. He hopes the film will break the stereotype that Indian cinema is underfunded, adding that despite strong content, Indian films often lack global recognition—something he aims to change through this ambitious project. He remarked:

“All the films, they saw us as victims, and we were poor and always less fortunate and treated poorly by the world. And I was like, no, that's not who we are. That's not the country I come from.”
Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and co-produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, will be the biggest film in the history of Indian cinema. The two-part film will be released globally in multiple languages and features Ranbir Kapoor as ‘Lord Ram’, Yash as ‘Ravan’, Sai Pallavi as ‘Sita’, Sunny Deol as ‘Hanuman’, and Ravi Dubey as ‘Laxman’.
