My Fiance Lost His Job

Question
I have known my fiancé for five years now and we are going to get married in two months. However he lost his job last month and we are left wondering if we should go ahead and get married or wait. We love each other a lot and believe that we can get through this together but both of us seem to have second thoughts. I do have a job but is it sensible to wait till he gets a job?

Answer
One can only imagine how shocking this must have been for you. It is definitely not going to be easy but if you guys believe that you can face this challenge together, go ahead and get married. As long as both of you can still afford a simple wedding ceremony and work out a plan of survival for the next six months or until your fiancé can find a job, you should not face any more problems. However remember that at times money may get real tight and you might not be able to afford holidays or a lifestyle you had thought of. Avoid fights and misdirected anger at such times because you don’t want to feel worse about things which were better left unsaid. Also your financial situation is only temporary, your fiancé might get a good job very soon or you might find yourself in a better job too. Just remember to keep things in perspective and remind your fiancé that it’s just a job which has been lost. You still have your lives, family, health and skills. Use pre marriage counseling if you feel the need and support your fiancé in every step as he copes with job loss. Most importantly, remember that the vows that the two of you are about to take are to be there for each other 'for better or worse'.
