Murali Naik, an Indian Army jawan hailing from the Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh, succumbed to injuries during the heavy shelling from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LoC) on May 9, 2025. Murali was serving the Indian army and was fighting in the frontline, as a part of Operation Sindoor, to avenge the Pahalgam attack. The Indian Army jawan, who was in his early 20s, died at 2 am on May 9, 2025. Read on to know more about the brave young martyr and his family.
Murali Naik was a resident of Kalli Thanda village under Gorantla mandal in Andra Pradesh’s Sri Sathya Sai district. Murali completed his schooling at Vigyan High School in Somandepalli, Andhra Pradesh. According to the Press Trust of India (PTI) reports, Murali joined the Indian Army in November 2022 as an Agniveer and underwent training at Nashik, Maharashtra. The Army jawan belonged to the 851 Light Regiment of the Indian Army’s Northern Command. Murali’s parents, Mudavath Sriram Naik and Jyothibai, worked as labourers in the construction industry in Mumbai, and returned to their village after Murali, their only son, joined the Army.
The tragic news of their son’s death came to Murali’s family on May 9, 2025, around 9 a.m. by the Indian Army officials. According to the PTI reports, Murali’s father, Sriram Naik, talked to a local channel sharing his grief of losing his only child. Sriram was quoted as saying:
“My son died for the country. He fought for the country. What makes us sad is that I have only one son. We depended on him, and our support is gone. Now we have become orphans, my wife and I. Whatever the solution, I leave it to the country. Whatever decision it will take is up to the country."
As per The Indian Express reports, Murali's father shared that his son loved the uniform and had always dreamt of joining the Indian army. Sriram also mentioned that his son, Murali, was proud to serve the nation. Sharing how was Murali as a person, Sriram said:
“It was his dream to join the Army. He loved the uniform very much. He was a friendly and easy-going person. As an Army jawan, he was highly motivated and proud to serve the nation.”

In an interview with the Indian Express, Murali’s cousin brother, Ranjit, shared that Murali called on the night of May 6, 2025, during the ongoing Indo-Pak tensions at the border. Ranjit shared that the Army jawan was worried for his family when he was actively serving the nation. Addressing the same, Murali’s cousin brother said:
“He was worried about his parents. I told him to take care of himself and be safe, and assured him that we relatives will look after his parents. He sounded worried, which was never the case before. He described the constant shelling and firing from across the border.”
Losing a brave hero like Murali Naik is a great loss for the Indian Army. May his family fight this tough phase.
