Mumtaz Askari Madhvani, popularly known as Mumtaz, was one of the most glamorous actresses of her era, popular for her iconic saree draping style, fondly called the ‘Mumtaz style’. She starred opposite iconic actors like Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Dharmendra. While her pairing with Rajesh Khanna created on-screen magic, it was her Brahmachari co-star, Shammi Kapoor, who won her heart off-screen, but their romance eventually ended. Mumtaz later found her forever in Ugandan businessman, Mayur Madhvani.
Mumtaz tied the knot with Mayur Madhvani in 1974, but only after a two-year delay, as she wished to exit the film industry before settling down. In a recent interview with Filmibeat, the Upaasna actress shared that Mayur patiently waited while she finished her professional commitments. Mumtaz revealed it took her two years to complete her pending films and return the signing amounts for nearly four to five projects. In her words:
"It took my husband to wait for two years till I finished my signing thing, signing amount maine wapas kiya… kitni picturein maine chhor di."
Mumtaz, one of the most iconic stars of the ’70s, has no regrets about leaving her film career behind to marry Mayur Madhvani. She has always followed her heart, and settling down with him felt like the right choice. But the only thing she regrets about her marriage is that she doesn’t get to spend enough time with Mayur because of his hectic, travel-filled schedule. Reflecting on her happy marriage, Mumtaz explained:
"I'm a free bird, I don't have to bother… My husband has given me houses everywhere in the world, so I'm very happy. My husband really keeps me very happy. Mujhe kisi bhi cheez ki kami nahi krte. Ek hi cheez ki kami hai ki I hardly see my husband because he never stays anywhere more than 5-10 days. If he's not travelling, then I'm travelling."
Mumtaz had known Mayur Madhvani and his family since childhood, and over time, love blossomed between them. In a 2022 interview with Pinkvilla, the veteran actress spoke fondly of their marriage, describing it as blissful despite some difficult phases. She revealed that she suffered three to four miscarriages, but Mayur stood by her with unwavering support and care until they were finally blessed with two daughters, Natasha and Tanya.
Mumtaz also opened up about her battle with cancer, crediting her recovery to Mayur’s constant support. She underwent six chemotherapy sessions and 35 radiation treatments during her fight, and her husband kept her going. She shared:

"Had it not been for my husband, I’d have been dead by now. Mine was a slow-growing cancer. The doctors said that they had removed what was necessary. But Mayur...insisted that they check the lymph nodes. He asked me, ‘Do you mind going through another surgery for my sake? I want my children to have their mother. I will love you even if you have no hair.’ He said I’d look cute like the bald doll popular in America.”
Although Mumtaz didn’t hesitate to leave her career to marry her now-husband, she once ended her relationship with actor, Shammi Kapoor for the sake of her profession. In an interview with Vickey Lalwani earlier this year, she spoke candidly about her deep love for Shammi and shared that their 17–18 year age gap never bothered her. However, Raj Kapoor opposed the idea of a Kapoor daughter-in-law working in films post-marriage.
