Sanya Malhotra, Kanwaljit Singh and Nishant Dahiya's film, Mrs. has been the talk of town ever since it was released on Zee 5. The film has received polarised reactions; one fraction feels Sanya's on-screen character, 'Richa', faced the patriarchal wrath of society, while the other section felt that the movie showed men in a bad light. Kanwaljit and Nishant have become topics of conversation, and the veteran actor revealed how he apologised to Sanya for essaying the role. He also spoke about the discussions happening around the movie.
For the unversed in Mrs., Kanwaljit plays the orthodox and strict father-in-law to Sanya, who plays the character of 'Richa'. He is not happy with the way she cooks, always finds faults, and does not let her work, and the setting of his home is shown to be patriarchal. During an interview with India Today, the actor shared that he had shot for the movie a long time back and had not remembered his role. When he was invited by the production team for the red carpet event he remembered the shooting and said:
"All I remember was how I ate a lot of food; otherwise, I didn't remember much. Since that film, I have shot for almost four other projects, so I had forgotten all about the character. When I saw the film, I felt so disgusted that I instantly went to Sanya and said sorry."
Kanwaljit, going ahead in the interview, shared that Sanya was shocked when he told her sorry. He said he told the actress of troubling her in the movie, which made him feel bad. Sanya did ace her part well in the movie but had to undergo a traumatic ordeal. When Kanwaljit was asked about the hate he received for playing an orthodox father-in-law who aced manners he said:
"Honestly, people sometimes get deeply involved with films and characters. They have forgotten that this man has also been part of Family No 1—he is not like that in real life. But when you see such discussions, you also feel nice about it as it's a triumph for the makers. It's important that people understand they are not supposed to be like this character. However, the fact that people are discussing the film, in any way, is a great takeaway."
Kanwaljit, moving ahead, shared how he managed to ace these important roles without judging the character's personality. He spoke about his approach to getting into a character and shared he knows his character is wrong, but he had to play it convincingly. Kanwaljit shared how these fatherly figures keep saying beta ji in the northern side. Even though they speak lovingly, they don’t really mean it. In his words:
"So, when I was shooting, I really thought that this would work for the character. Also, I had to play it in an undertone to avoid making him look like a typical villain. He's a control freak with deep-rooted patriarchal beliefs. He just doesn't know any better."
What do you think of Kanwaljit Singh apologising to Sanya Malhotra?
