Moushumi Chatterjee has been one of the most celebrated actresses in Hindi and Bengali film industry. Known for her powerful screen presence, expressive eyes and versatility, she was among the highest-paid actresses in Hindi cinema during the '70s. Fans continue to remember her iconic roles in films like Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Dil Aur Deewar, Manzil and more. Still, only a few of them know that behind that glitzy screen, the actress was known to have a significant rivalry in the industry. Yes, it was with none other than another diva from the '70s; Rekha. In a recent interview, Moushumi Chatterjee shared more details about it.
Moushumi Chatterjee sat down for a conversation with Filmfare and opened up about her bond with her female contemporaries. Among others, she recalled her rivalry with Rekha and shared that a significant reason for the same was Vinod Mehra. For those unaware, Vinod was another popular actor from the same era who was allegedly considered to be close to Rekha. Moushumi believes Rekha was jealous of her because she felt that Moushumi controlled Vinod. Sharing the reason for the same, the veteran actress said:
"Because she (Rekha) is sitting in his house, and (Vinod's) mother used to tell me, 'Indu, Vinod ki cupboard mein se envelope nikal do'. So naturally, she used to not like it, and I used to ask his mother why she asked me; she is sitting there, you go and take it, and then she used to say I don't care. I was the victim."
Moushumi added that the rivalry wasn't just limited to their personal lives but rather extended to their film sets, as Rekha used to make dismissive gestures towards her. Once when she had enough, the Auraag actress went to confront Rekha who became nervous over it. Moushumi said:
"She used to make faces while seeing me as if she didn't care. And once, I approached her and asked, 'How did you do that? Do it again, in front of me?' She got nervous."
In the same conversation, Moushumi revealed that when she was shooting for Prem Bandhan with Rekha, director, Ramanand Sagar once asked her to remove her heels during a scene with Rekha to ensure they have the same height. However, she refused, and asked the filmmaker to make Rekha use a stool or something. Recalling another instance from their time working on Daasi, where Rekha tried to take her role, Moushumi said:
"She got fed up playing the second woman. She insisted to Raj Khosla, 'Give me the role of Dassi, I should be Sanjeev Kumar's wife. Let her do this one.' I remember all his assistants, Sagar and others, they were laughing. He was a little high when she made that request, so he just said, 'Mereko poora story change karna padega'.
Moushumi Chatterjee made her acting debut as a child artist in the 1967 film, Balika Badhu. She went to work in Hindi and Bengali films like Parineeta, Anindita, Anuraag, Naina, Humshakal, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan. She worked with Rekha in Prem Bandhan, Maang Bharo Sajana, Dildaar, Jyoti Bane Jwala, and Bhola Bhola, among others. Gradually, Moushumi transitioned into the character roles of a mother and sister-in-law in the 1980s and entered into politics a few years ago. The actress was last seen in the Bengali film, Aarii with Yash Dasgupta and Nusrat Jahan in key roles.
