Mini Mathur is known for her extravagant and charming personality. A prolific television host, model and actress, she has indeed donned too many hats of achievements in her career span, and there has been no looking back ever since. In her personal life, she is married to ace filmmaker, Kabir Khan.
One of the most common aspects of a woman’s married life in India is to get their surname changed the minute they get married. However, Mini Mathur completely believes the contrary. In the recent podcast episode hosted by Cyrus Broacha, she opened up on why she never changed her last name and added Khan to it. Revealing that Mini Mathur has been her identity ever since and that she did not want to add support to her name by adding the last name of her husband, she mentioned:

“For me, it was very simple. My identity was Mini Mathur much before I married Kabir Khan, so I don’t see why I need his name’s support. And also, it was his suggestion. He said, bank change karna padega, passport change karna padega, bahut complicated hai. He never asked me to change my name, and I never wanted to change my name. And thankfully, it was never a discussion.”

Moving forward in the interview, Mini also recollected several instances where she had been constantly nagged about not changing her name by adding those of either her father or husband. Highlighting she has often got into fights for all of these, she revealed:
“When you walk into a passport office, especially in Maharashtra government, they’re like, aapka naam Mini Suresh Mathur hona chahiye ya phir Mini Kabir Khan hona chahiye, because without your husband’s name in the middle, you’re nobody. I have fought and fought and fought, and I still don’t keep my father or brother’s name anywhere. Even in a school form, I fight. Why do you need a column for religion, why do you need my husband’s name to support mine?”
Mini Mathur and Kabir Khan epitomise a successful inter-faith marriage, and even after 25 years of marital bliss, the duo have never found religion as a bone of contention between them. Just a day ago, Kabir Khan joined The Humans Of Bombay in an interview session and revealed how, back home, both he and Mini never force their kids, Vivaan and Sairah, to follow a particular faith only. In his words:
“The way we have brought up our children, is also the way how I was brought up. We never really tried to push them into a direction. We let them celebrate and follow whatever they have a passion for. Because I think that’s the way you find your path.”

Despite coming from two very different backgrounds, Kabir and Mini have found commonality in their undying love for one another. In the same interview with The Humans Of Bombay, Kabir Khan further revealed how the two of them having been brought up in a secular environment helped them find religion not a factor to fight on. Calling himself an atheist, he recalled his wedding and mentioned:
“We had a wedding, did rituals from both sides, more for the families than for us. I am actually an atheist so I don’t really truly believe in God and religion so it was very easy for me to sort of accept all that. We’ve had many fights, we’ve had lots of issues but religion has never been one.”
We love the way how Mini and Kabir have prioritised love above anything else!
