'Memory Of A Killer' Episode 9 Ending Explained: A Deadly Race And The Night It All Went Wrong

Patrick Dempsey's 'Angelo's' worlds collide in the penultimate episode of the much-loved series, Memory of a Killer Season 1. The previous episode revealed that 'Ferryman', the one who hired the hitman to go after 'Angelo's' daughter, 'Maria', is none other than FBI Special Agent, 'Grant'. She wanted revenge for her dead son, 'Dr Robert Parks', who died at the hands of 'Angelo'.

'Grant' makes a major move in Memory of a Killer, Season 1, Episode 9, titled Shoot the Piano Player. However, she is not the only one; 'Angelo' has some information for her that he hopes will change things. So, as we wait for the finale to be released on April 6, 2026 (ET), let's take a look at what happened in the episode that sets the stage for it. Warning: Spoilers ahead!

'Dutch' is under fire for not controlling 'Angelo'

'Stefanie Gilchrist' goes after 'Dutch' for not controlling 'Angelo', who has been looking into the 'Parks' hit. However, the restaurant owner strikes back, taking out her men and tying her up. Nonetheless, when 'Angelo' confronts him, 'Dutch' insists that he didn't know 'Parks' was innocent and that he had been protecting his friend all this time. The incident creates a rift between 'Dutch' and 'Angelo', with the latter questioning how he'd ever trust him again. After seeing 'Stefani', 'Dutch' was seen washing his blood-soaked hands as he told 'Angelo' that the former doesn't know anything about 'Ferryman'.

Memory of a Killer Episode 9 explores 'Grant's' obsession

On the other hand, 'Grant' is revealed to have done something he shouldn't have: replacing her drinking with an obsession with 'Angelo'. She starts meeting 'Earl', who killed the hitman's wife to take out 'Maria' while she has someone take an aim at 'Angelo's' brother, 'Michael'. When he expresses concerns about entering 'Maria's' house, she assures him she'll handle it. That's when 'Angelo's' love interest, Nicky' who is indebted to 'Ferryman' comes in. For the unversed, she was blackmailed by 'Grant' into working for her, after 'Nicky' killed her abusive ex-husband in self-defence to protect her daughter. Left with no choice but to follow 'Grant's' orders 'Nicky' approaches 'Maria' during yoga again, invites herself over to help baby-proof the house, and disarms the alarm system while there.

A tender moment amid the chaos

'Angelo' recieves a call from his brother, 'Michael', asking for help. However, when the former reaches the care facility, he learns that his nurse has been replaced and catches her snooping through his drawers. However, this arc also has some vulnerable moments where 'Angelo' shows his brother a picture of 'Maria' and tells him he's going to be a grandfather. He also laments over his wife's absence, reflecting on how this was all she ever wanted.

The truth finally unravels

The first half of the episode sets the pace for the truth's unravelling. 'Angelo' received a call from 'Nicky' apologising and promising to fix what she did, without being clear about what was going on. 'Angelo' is then seen entering 'Grant' into a cafe and thanking her for the work she did on his daughter's case. However, 'Grant points out how important family is and said:

"Family is everything and if you're anything like me, there's absolutely nothing you wouldn't do to protect them."

However, when 'Parks' widow, whom 'Angelo' met as "Arthur" in a grief group at her house, walks over, the hitman learns that 'Grant' is his victim's mother. 'Angelo' is soon seen getting into his car as he lets his frustration out, ripping the rearview mirror out and slamming it, breaking it.

The final confrontation between 'Grant' and 'Angelo'

The same night, 'Grant' called 'Angelo' and told him that, before him, she had helped others. She claimed, "You turned me into this, into someone who manipulates victims and threatens innocent people. We're the same now. Both of us. Monsters." While he can't bring her son back, he says that he could set up a meeting for her. Later, in an abandoned warehouse, 'Angelo' introduces her to 'Glichrist', the person who turned them both into monsters. He makes her explain why she hired him to kill 'Robert', to which 'Glichrist' revealed that the safety issue he had found could've cost the company billions. 'Grant' kills her and warns 'Angelo' that she's not done with him, and two of his loved ones are about to die.

Who will 'Angelo' save?

As 'Angelo' hurried out calling 'Maria' over and over, 'Earl' breaks into her house and 'Michael' is attacked at the facility. However, 'Maria' is ready and shoots 'Earn' even as he taunts her that she doesn't have it in her. However, when she goes downstairs and calls 9-1-1, he comes up behind her. In a climactic moment, 'Angelo' shoots him before he can shoot his daughter. "Dad?" Maria asks in shock. As for 'Michael', when 'Angelo' gets to the facility, there's a dead body in the rec room, which is the piano player. As it turns out, the new nurse was hired by 'Dutch' to protect 'Michael'. While 'Angelo' may not know if he can trust him, 'Dutch' assures him that he's been protecting him and his brother from the start, like always.
