Born as Gayatri Das to Mohandas and his wife, Latha, in Kerala, Geetu studied in India, Malaysia and Canada. She adopted the name 'Geetu' when she appeared in the film, Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare, and the name became her identity.
Geetu Mohandas made her acting debut in 1986 opposite Mohanlal. She was just 5 years old at that time. The critics and audience loved her debut film, and Geetu garnered a lot of attention. For her performance, Geetu won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist. She then went on to appear in films like Sayam Sandhya, Veendum, Rareeram and the top-grosser, En Bommukutty Ammavukku.

In 2000, Geetu Mohandas made her debut as an adult in the film, Life Is Beautiful, opposite Mohanlal. She proved her versatility as an actress in films like Thenkasipattanam, Kannaki, Sesham Valkannadi, Rappakal, Akasha Gopuram, Nammal Thammil and others. Her role in Akale won her Kerala State Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actress- Malayalam.
After her last film, Nammal Thammil, in 2009, Geetu ventured into filmmaking and directed her first Malayalam short film, Kelkkunnundo, in 2009. The short film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and won three international awards for Best Short Fiction. It received a National Award and was also included in the Kerala state syllabus for 12th grade.
In 2013, Geetu made her debut as a director by directing a feature film, Liar’s Dice, which bagged two National Film Awards. Not just this, the film also marked India’s official entry to the 87th Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.
Her next venture was Moothoon, which was again a successful film and garnered a lot of applause. She won the Global Filmmaker Award at the Sundance Film Festival for Moothoon.
Geetu Mohandas married India’s most reputed cinematographer, Rajeev Ravi, in Kochi in 2009. The couple has a daughter, whom they named Aradhana. Rajeev Ravi is a popular cinematographer and a well-known director.
He debuted as a cinematographer with the film, Chandni Bar in 2001, which was followed by films like No Smoking, Dev D, Gulaal, Gangs of Wasseypur, Bombay Talkies, Udta Punjab, Maharaj and many others.
Rajeev made his debut as a director with the 2013 film, Annayum Rasoolum. He has also directed films like Njan Steve Lopez, Kammatti Paadam, Kuttavum Shikshayum and Thuramukham. The National Award-winning cinematographer is a genius in his craft.
