Meet Sofiya Qureshi's Twin Sister, Shyna Sunsara, A Proud Sister, Vadodara's 'Wonder Woman'

Sofiya Qureshi has now become a household name. While the entire nation feels proud of her actions, there has been a person who holds a separate emotion for Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The person is none other than Sofiya’s twin sister, Shyna Sunsara. When Colonel Sofiya Qureshi gave the high-level military briefing to the press on Operation Sindoor, a proud sister was clapping hard. But do you know, just like her twin sister, Shyna also holds a dignified position? Read on to know more about her.

Who is Dr. Shyna Sunsara?

Apart from being a twin sister to Sofiya, Shyna holds a position of her own. She is a former Army cadet. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sofiya revealed that just like her sister, Sofiya, she too dreamt of joining the Indian army and wearing the uniform. Recalling what Sofiya used to say to her, Shyna said:

"She'd say, I'll go through DRDO as a scientist to join the Army.”

Besides being a former Army cadet, Shyna is an economist, a model, a fashion designer and an environmentalist. She also received a gold medal from the President of India for rifle shooting. Shyna was honoured with several accolades, including the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award for her excellent contributions to the Indian fashion industry, titled as Ms Gujarat, Ms India Earth in 2017, Ms United Nations 2018, Ms India Earth World.

She is popular in Vadodara as ‘Wonder Woman’. Shyna is recognised for her initiative of planting one lakh trees in Gujarat. The former Army cadet is also recognised as a World Peace Ambassador with the Global Gandhi Award at the British Parliament in 2019.

In the same interview, the proud sister of Sofiya, Shyna shared that she and her family didn’t know about Sofiya’s briefing on India’s Operation Sindoor. She stated that only after getting a call from a relative to turn on the TV, they came to know about it. Sharing the proud moment, Shyna said:

"It was not only a proud moment for us, but India. Such a good answer our government and PM Modi gave."

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and her twin sister, Shyna Sunshara, were born in a military family. The family has been maintaining a long-term legacy of serving the nation. Starting with Sofiya’s great-grandmother, she was part of the historic 1857 revolt, served in the British Indian Army and also worked with the Queen of Jhansi, Rani Laxmi Bai. Next comes her grandfather, who served in the Religious Teacher (RT) cadre in the Indian Army. 

Sofiya’s dad, Taj Mohammad Qureshi, fought in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Sofiya got married to Tajuddin Bagewadi, a resident of Konnur village, Karnataka, in 2015, and now, the couple is serving officers in the Indian Army. Sofiya is posted in Jammu, while Tajuddin is posted in Jhansi. Sofiya’s 18-year-old son, too, follows the family tradition and is currently prepping to join the Indian Air Force.
