While his professional life and linkups with actresses often make it to the headlines, not much is talked about his personal life. However, one incident was on everyone's mind when reports claimed that Ram Gopal Varma's then-wife, Ratna, slapped the famous '90s actress, Urmila Matondkar.
According to several reports claim that famous actress, Urmila Matondkar's career was ruined due to Ram Gopal Varma. His name was often associated with Urmila Matondkar. He would often give a maximum number of films to the actress. It was his film, Rangeela, that made Urmila a top actress.
Soon, reports of their affair made rounds. It was Urmila and Ram Gopal Varma's growing closeness that worked as fuel to the already ignited fire. When it reached his then-wife, Ratna. It created a huge issue in their marital life. Things reached the point that RGV's wife, Ratna, slapped Urmila for having an affair with her husband.
It was reported that things escalated further to the point that Ram Gopal Varm and Ratna Varma decided to end their marriage. This incident even ruined Urmila's filmy career while Ram Gopal Varma's marital life ended on an ugly note.
RGV talked about his bond with Urmila in his autobiography, Guns and Thighs: The Story of My Life. Ram wrote about Urmila in a chapter titled 'Women In My Life'. He expressed Urmila was the first girl to leave an impact on him. An excerpt from the book can be read as:
"Post coming into films, the first girl to have an impact on me was Urmila Matondkar. I was mesmerised by Urmila's beauty -- from her face to her figure... everything about her was just divine. She had done a few films before Rangeela, which hadn't done well and she hadn't made much of an impact on the audience either."

Ram Gopal Varma kept his personal life guarded and shielded from the media. His affair with actresses made headlines, but he never addressed or dismissed the murmurs. Ram Gopal Varma also has a daughter, Revathi, from his marriage with Ratna. Once, in a press conference for his film, Attack, he shared the reason behind his divorce.
Ram Gopal Varma claimed that he separated from his wife, Ratna due to ghazals. He shared that his wife loves listening to ghazals while he would love Ilaiyaraaja songs. So, at night his ex-wife, Ratna would play ghazals, which ultimately ended their marriage. Ram Gopal Varma was quoted as saying:
"Ghazals are one of the reasons for my divorce. My wife likes ghazals a lot and I like to hear Ilaiyaraaja songs.She would play ghazals at night, which I didn't like."
