Katie Couric has lived much of her life in the public eye, but her personal story feels very real and deeply human. After losing her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer on January 24, 1998, she spent years focusing on work, raising her daughters, and speaking openly about health awareness. Their story started in 2012 through a mutual friend. Couric had asked if there were any single doctors she could meet, but instead, she was introduced to a banker, John Molner. He later reached out and asked her out, and things moved quickly from there. Couric later shared with PEOPLE in 2018, “What can I say, he had me at hello.” By Labour Day weekend in September 2013, Molner proposed during a beach trip. Less than a year later, on June 21, 2014, they got married in a small backyard ceremony at her home in East Hampton, New York.

The wedding felt personal and full of meaning. Their children played important roles. Molner’s kids, Allie and Henry, read during the ceremony, while Couric’s daughters, Ellie and Carrie, also took part. Carrie even sang 'I Will by The Beatles.' During a 2014 appearance on the Today show with Savannah Guthrie, Couric expressed:

“It was very very intimate and special. I hate to be shallow but the weather was perfect… it was just perfect.”

John Molner's career in finance and role as CEO of Katie Couric Media

John Molner spent most of his career in finance. He studied at Trinity College and later completed his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He then spent over three decades working at Brown Brothers Harriman, a well-known financial firm, before stepping away in 2014. Even after that, he stayed active in the business world as a senior advisor.

In 2018, he and Couric started a new chapter together by launching Katie Couric Media. In this company, Molner handles the business side as CEO, while Couric focuses on the creative direction. While speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2022, Couric explained their working dynamic clearly, stating:

“I want to create a media company… And I’m doing it with my husband John. He’s the CEO because I’m the more creative person, he’s a strong, smart, businessman.”

Life has not been without challenges for the couple. Just months before their 2014 wedding, Molner went through surgery to remove a liver tumour. Then, years later, in June 2022, Couric was diagnosed with breast cancer. She shared her diagnosis publicly in September 2022 through a personal essay and later spoke about it on the Today show. She expressed that she felt fortunate that the cancer was found early.

Through these moments, Molner stayed by her side. Their relationship has often shown a sense of immense strength, facing serious health issues together while continuing to support each other. In March 2026, while speaking to USA Today, Couric reflected on her past with Jay Monahan and shared a deeply personal regret. She expressed:

“I wish we had gone to talk to somebody who could have helped facilitate that kind of conversation… the only way I knew to deal with Jay’s illness was to not give up hope.”

John Molner is also a father of two, his son Henry and daughter Allie, from a previous marriage. Over time, their blended family has grown closer. In March 2024, Couric became a grandmother when her daughter, Ellie welcomed a baby boy, John Albert, on March 23, 2024. The child was named “Jay” in honour of her late husband, Jay Monahan. Couric shared the news on Instagram and expressed how meaningful the moment felt for the family. Outside of work and family, Molner enjoys simple things. He likes reading, cooking, and watching shows. In a 2020 feature for Katie Couric Media, he shared that his ideal weekend includes a good book and home-cooked meals like spaghetti carbonara. He also enjoys golf and has often spent time on courses with friends.

Couric has often spoken about his personality, too. She described him as someone with a dry sense of humour who keeps things light.
