Meet Doha Open Semi-Finalist Maria Sakkari's BF Konstantinos Mitsotakis, Is He The Son Of Greece PM?

Maria Sakkari is one of the most renowned Greek professional tennis players. In her professional career, which she began in 2015, many might not be aware, but she failed in her first two attempts to debut on the WTA Tour. On her third attempt, she successfully made her debut and also achieved the remarkable feat of qualifying for the US Open. Reportedly, Sakkari's first WTA Tour win was at the 2016 Australian Open. She continued to climb the WTA rankings after that and, in 2022, reached her career-high ranking of No. 3. Unfortunately, her 2023, 2024, and 2025 seasons did not go as well as she would have liked, resulting in her dropping out of the top 75.  

However, Maria Sakkari is not one to give up so easily. If you have been keeping up with her recent matches in the 2026 Qatar Open, you might be aware that she defeated world No. 2 and second seed, Iga Swiatek, to reach the semifinals. As she gears up to take the centre court against her opponent, Karolína Muchová, fans have also started to wonder about the tennis player's personal life. For the unversed, Maria Sakkari is in a relationship with her longtime partner, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, whom she started dating in 2020. Konstantinos Mitsotakis is the son of the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis 

Maria Sakkari's boyfriend, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, comes from no ordinary background, reportedly belonging to one of the most well-known and politically connected families in Greece. In fact, his father, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is currently serving as the Prime Minister of Greece. Yes, you read that right! Previously, the position was also held by his grandfather, with whom he shares his name, from 1990 to 1993.  

It is worth noting that Konstantinos has many other relatives who are well-known faces in political circles. His cousin, Kostas Bakoyannis, served as the mayor of Athens, Greece, from 2019 to 2023. Konstantinos' aunt, Dora Bakoyannis, previously held the post of the country's Foreign Minister. According to People, Maria Sakkari's boyfriend's great-great-great-uncle is hailed as one of the most popular Prime Ministers of all time in Greece.

Not much information is available about how and when Maria Sakkari met her boyfriend, Konstantinos Mitsotakis. However, during an interview with the Greek television channel, Alpha, Sakkari confessed that she and Konstantinos began dating back in 2020. At the time of the interview, in September 2021, she claimed that it had already been a year since they met and that he had helped her a lot. To quote Maria Sakkari's exact words from the interview: 

“It has been a year now since we met, and the truth is that he helped me a lot. He is a special guy. I have disclosed the relationship anyway; it is not hidden.”

Despite always being in the public eye, Maria Sakkari keeps her relationship with Konstantinos Mitsotakis pretty private. Although on a rare occasion, the tennis player gave a brief insight into her romance with her boyfriend while speaking to DownTown Magazine. She said: 

"I know that I am happy, and I have the right person next to me who makes me happy, and I just focus on that. There are always malicious people in everything you do in life, whether it's a relationship or your job. They will always find something to say. I know that I am very good with this man, that we have a great time together, and that's what matters." 

Konstantinos plays a huge role and is supportive of Maria Sakkari's career 

Being the amazing boyfriend that he is, Konstantinos is wildly supportive of his girlfriend and her career. In 2021, during her interview with Alpha, Maria revealed that he was one of the main reasons she performed well. Speaking in Greek, Maria said: 

"I think it was a big part of why I did well at Roland Garros, as I spent my free time with him very differently from when I was alone. He calmed me down, he talked to me, he was very supportive. Konstantinos is a very simple guy."

Having fallen for a professional tennis player, it comes as no surprise that Konstantinos is also pretty good at the sport. In Maria's 2021 interview with Alpha, she opened up about the enjoyable moments she has while playing tennis with her boyfriend. She also added how good a player he is on the court. Mentioning that he has an excellent serve, Maria stated, “We will play many times, I think he likes to play together.”  

Konstantinos Mitsotakis has served in the Greek military  

Maria Sakkari's boyfriend, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, has served in the Greek military. For those unaware, military service is mandatory in Greece. Notably, a 21-year-old Konstantinos enlisted in the country's Artillery in September 2020. If reports are believed to be true, Konstantinos served in Alexandroupolis, which is on the Greek-Turkish border in the northeast. At the time, Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis took to his Instagram, posting a photo of his son and writing in Greek: 

“One very proud father! I'm sorry that, due to Covid, I couldn't come to Alexandroupolis."

After 5 years of dating, Maria Sakkari and Konstantinos Mitsotakis took the next big step in their relationship. It was during one of his customary meetings with Konstantinos Tasoulas, the President of the Hellenic Republic, and Nikita Kaklamanis, Speaker of Parliament, that Kyriakos Mitsotakis first revealed his son had proposed to Maria Sakkari ahead of her Australia trip. He said that he was very happy about Konstantinos and Sakkari's engagement, while calling the latter “an exceptional young woman.”  

Maria Sakkari and Konstantinos Mitsotakis are expected to tie the knot in 2027.
