A new princess is in the house, and she is already taking the internet by storm. The cameras have officially started rolling for Nintendo and Sony’s long-awaited live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, directed by Wes Ball. The filming has begun in New Zealand this week, and the makers have released first glimpses from the shoot.
Amid all the excitement, what has caught the most attention is the new princess of the fictional kingdom of Hyrule, Princess Zelda. Stepping into her shoes is Bo-Bragason, a 21-year-old rising British actress, whose transformation has instantly sparked global buzz around the live-action film. Here’s everything you need to know about the British beauty and her mystical transformation for the film.

For nearly four decades, The Legend of Zelda has remained one of the most popular and beloved video game franchises, ruling our hearts since its debut in February 1986. After spawning dozens of sequels, spin-offs, and even a short-lived animated show in 1986, the fan-favourite series is finally spilling on the big screen. Nintendo is all set to bring the iconic world of Hyrule to life with this full-size live-action movie, slated for a May 2027 release.

Throughout its decades-long legacy, the legendary ‘Princess Zelda’ has been a synonym of mystical warrior princess, with flowing blonde hair, ethereal gowns, and wisdom. However, Bo Bragson’s version makes a huge shift.

In the first looks shared through the Nintendo Today app and on X (formerly Twitter), the new ‘Zelda’ immediately strikes as different, appearing in a Champion-blue tunic and tawny blonde hair that’s noticeably shorter. And perhaps the biggest shocker of all was the blow slung across her shoulder. Gone are the delicate silhouettes and pastel sleeves- this ‘Zelda’ is ready for battle!

This modern-day rendition of ‘Princess Zelda’ has sparked a wave of discussion on social media; some are confused, while others are thrilled to see a combat-ready princess. Some X users have lauded the “insane attention to detail” in the costume that subtly highlights period pieces, such as the Triforce motif woven directly into the fabric, thanks to the work of acclaimed costume designer Michele Clapton, celebrated for Game of Thrones and The Crown. One user noted:
“I am in awe of the attention to detail! That’s the Triforce made into a pattern! I expected nothing less. This is going to be an amazing movie.”

While most of the internet may be seeing her for the first time, this is not Bo Bragason’s first work. Born in 2004 in England’s Chichester, West Sussex, Bragason stepped into her acting career at just 13, starring in BBC One’s award-winning true-crime drama, Three Girls. Her grounded acting earned her significant praise, landing her versatile roles in various series and feature films.
At just 21 years old, Bo has appeared in numerous works in the entertainment industry. After her breakout role in Three Girls, she made early TV appearances as a teen in Moving On and Creeped Out. She also appeared in the 2021 British psychological horror feature film Censor. Her role as ‘Roxy Trotter’ in Amazon Prime Video’s Renegade Nell is her most recognisable to date, appearing in all episodes of the miniseries.

Some of Bragason’s other notable works include The Jetty, The Radleys, and King & Conqueror. And now, her role as ‘Princess Zelda’ in Nintendo and Sony’s The Legend of Zelda marks her first leading role, and it has already set the stage for her global fame. Given her versatility in playing roles across diverse genres, Bo Bragason has demonstrated all the traits her character demands: heart, intelligence, courage, and, most importantly, emotional depth. Based on the initial fan reactions, her first look as ‘Princess Zelda’ has been overwhelmingly positive.

Joining Bo Bragason is 17-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, best known for Pinocchio and Son of a Critch. His casting confirmation has finally put to rest months of speculative fan theories linking names like Tom Holland and Troye Sivan to the role. In the stills that have been circulating on the internet, Ainsworth looks every bit the determined ‘Link’, the Hylian hero clad in green, who perfectly complements ‘Zelda’.
The legend of Zelda spans across 22 games and three major branches of the story’s timeline: adult, child, and fallen hero. While Nintendo is currently keeping the plot under wraps, the costumes of ‘Zelda’ and ‘Link’, especially the former’s tunic details, hint at influences from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
What we do know so far about The Legend of Zelda is that it’s directed by Wes Ball, the filmmaker known for projects like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Maze Runner. The live-adaptation is slated for a global release on May 7, 2027, and filming has officially begun in New Zealand.
As filming begins, excitement is soaring, with high hopes from fans about the live-action adaptation. What are your thoughts on Bo Bragason’s casting as ‘Princess Zelda’? Let us know.
