Meena Kumari was the epitome of grace and beauty. Her eyes had the elegance of a poem, while her voice is the soul of every character she ever portrayed. While she rose to immense fame over her 33 years in the film industry, her personal life was marked by loneliness and isolation. We all know the tale of Meena Kumari. However, not many know about the love she had for the 'He-Man' of Bollywood, Dharmendra.
Dharmendra, the 'He-Man' of Bollywood, needs no introduction. He has been charming the country with his acting skills and charisma for over six decades, making everyone fall in love with him. However, while his on-screen life gained him love, fame, wealth, and a place in the history of Bollywood, his personal life has been filled with passion, drama, and unforgettable relationships.

Among Dharmendra's many rumoured affairs, the most intriguing yet overlooked is the alleged relationship with the 'Tragedy Queen of Bollywood'. Meena Kumari fell deeply in love with Dharmendra despite being married to filmmaker, Kamal Amrohi. Yes! Meena was married to Kamal, who was 15 years older than her and already a father of three.

However, their marriage was falling apart, and the Pakeezah actress found comfort in Dharmendra's company. The actress was lonely and heartbroken, so the affection she found in the actor's presence became her only source of happiness. However, she also genuinely believed in Dharmendra's talent. Meena Kumari reportedly recommended Dharmendra to filmmakers, helping him rise as a Bollywood superstar.

Dharmendra and Meena Kumari's chemistry was off the charts. However, the actress gradually became assertive about wanting to work only with Dharmendra. From their first film in 1965, Kaajal, to their last film together in 1968, Baharon Ki Manzil, the duo worked in six films, also including Phool Aur Patthar, Chandan Ka Palna, Majhil Didi and Purnima. However, once their affair became known, it's said that her ex-husband Kamal sought to humiliate Dharmendra in the 1983 film, Razia Sultan. Casting him in the demeaning role of a slave, Kamal smeared his face with mud and forced him to film under the blazing sun.

Meena Kumar's eyes spoke a thousand emotions. However, in real life, the actress had no one who could see her pain and longing. The actress began her film career at the age of 4, eventually becoming one of the top actresses of her time and amassing considerable wealth. Nonetheless, behind the fame and beauty was a fight against loneliness, eventually turning her to alcohol as a means of escape. The excess drinking led to the actress being diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, and while Meena sought treatment in renowned hospitals in Switzerland and London, her condition only worsened.

The tragedy struck too soon, and Meena Kumari passed away on March 31, 1972, at just 38 years old, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled talent and enduring sorrow. After her death, close friend and fellow actress, Nargis penned a deeply emotional letter, included in Yasir Abbasi's book, Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai. In the letter, she revealed that Meena Kumari's deepest emotional bond was with actor Dharmendra. Though never publicly acknowledged as a couple, their closeness was well known in the industry.
