Hollywood’s most iconic fashion duo, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, just turned heads at New York Fashion Week, making a rare appearance at a Friday night party hosted by Bloomingdale’s and W Magazine on September 12, 2025. This was the twins’ first joint appearance in three years, and the internet is obsessed with their dark hair as the former blondes flaunted long brunette waves.
For the evening, the gorgeous duo kept it simple in dark ensembles with just the right pop of colour. Mary-Kate Olsen draped a colourful oversized scarf over a grey shirt and black trousers, while Ashley opted for a sleek look, sporting a long black trench coat paired with a printed scarf. Both sisters carried black handbags and finished their minimalist looks with boots.
Despite their breakout fame, the Olsen twins prefer to stay away from the spotlight. And this is exactly why each public moment grabs attention. With their latest appearance grabbing the spotlight, it’s the perfect time to revisit how Mary-Kate and Ashley went from sitcom stars to style icons and built a combined fortune of USD 500 million along the way.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are part of the iconic Olsen sisters trio with their younger sister, Marvel star Elizabeth Olsen. Born on June 13, 1986, in Sherman Oaks, California, the fraternal twins had been ruling over Hollywood long before the younger Olsen sister rose to fame.
Now 39, the Olsen twins made their television debut in 1987, when they were just six months old, sharing the role of ‘Michelle Tanner’ on ABC’s beloved sitcom, Full House. By the time the show ended in 1995, the sisters were household names.

Their breakout fame in Full House soon followed numerous pursuits, and the sisters never looked back. They were eight years old by the time the show ended, and the same year, the pair starred in their top-rated film, It Takes Two, co-starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley.
Mary-Kate and Ashley appeared together and also as separate characters in television and films, making cameos in All My Children, guest-starring in an episode of Sister, Sister, and even lending their voices to a cameo role in an episode of The Simpsons in 2004. Some of their full-time works include Holiday in the Sun, So Little Time, and New York Minute.
From child stars in Full House, Mary-Kate and Ashley soon parlayed their success into a multimedia empire. By 1993, they had their own production company, Dualstar Entertainment, in partnership with their then-manager, Robert Thorne. The twins got full ownership of the company in 2004 when they turned 18. At its peak, Dualstar was reportedly pulling in USD 1 billion in sales per year, an astonishing feat for two teenagers still finishing high school.
By the time they were officially adults, the Olsen Twins had become breakout stars, producing multiple films and music videos under their production banner, most notably Double, Double, Toil and Trouble and How the West Was Fun. Their venture was not limited to acting: the twins went on to produce direct-to-video films, TV specials, books, and merchandise.
Their final major joint project was in 2004 with the film New York Minute, which also marked the end of their on-screen careers. Yes! By 18, the Olsen twins had retired from their profession and pivoted to fashion, a move that eventually catapulted their success as legendary fashion icons.
Mary-Kate and Ashley are an iconic Hollywood pair for a reason. More than sisters, they are partners who have always had each other’s backs and collaborated to establish a billion-dollar empire. In 2005, the Olsen twins launched their fashion label, The Row, beginning with a single white T-shirt. And now, the brand has evolved into one of the most respected names in luxury fashion.
Today, The Row is a global powerhouse, known for its clean lines, impeccable tailoring, and timeless silhouettes. Its annual earnings reportedly range between USD 100 million and USD 200 million. In 2024, the twins sold a minority stake in the label at a valuation of USD 1 billion.
Unlike most celebrity-owned fashion labels, The Row was never about the Olsen twins’ star power. From the start, they insisted on keeping their names and faces away from the brand, letting the designs speak for themselves, a strategy that earned them praise for credibility. Alongside The Row, the sisters launched Elizabeth and James, a more accessible brand named after their siblings.
According to multiple reports, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s combined net worth stands at USD 500 million, split evenly between the sisters. From their teens, the Olsen twins got a foundation with their Full House salaries, which reportedly jumped from USD 2,400 per episode to USD 80,000 by the time the series ended.
Even before they were adults, the twins had become millionaires with their film and merchandise empire, Dualstar. But the billion-dollar valuation of The Row cemented their status as two of the wealthiest women in Hollywood, despite not acting in nearly two decades.
With their massive fortune, the two successful businesswomen have also invested heavily in real estate. In 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley owned their first house, a USD 7.3 million penthouse in New York’s Morton Square. It was later listed for USD 12 million before selling for USD 7.7 million in 2010. That same year, they splurged on a Bel-Air mansion for USD 4 million, followed by a Spanish-style home in Larchmont Village, Los Angeles.
In 2014, Mary-Kate and her then-husband, Olivier Sarkozy, acquired a Turtle Bay townhouse for USD 13.5 million, while Ashley Olsen purchased a lavish USD 6.75 million Greenwich Village condo in 2016. Their elite property portfolio is spread across some of New York’s most exclusive neighbourhoods.
Both Mary-Kate and Ashley like to keep their personal lives private. In December 2022, Ashley Olsen married artist Louis Eisner in an intimate ceremony, and the couple welcomed a son, Otto, in 2023. The news came as a surprise to fans since she had never publicly revealed her pregnancy.
On the other hand, Mary-Kate’s five-year marriage to Olivier Sarkozy, a French banker, ended in 2021, reportedly resolved by an ‘ironclad’ prenup that protected her share of the fortune.
Despite their different paths, both sisters live low-key lives, occasionally surfacing for industry events, store openings, or nights out with their younger sister, Elizabeth Olsen, who has become a star in her own right as ‘Wanda Maximoff’ in Marvel’s Avengers films and WandaVision.
The Olsen twins’ latest NYFW appearance shows that even without constant visibility, they continue to turn heads with their tremendous success, not only as former actresses but also as one of the most adored fashion icons.
