Manoj Bajpayee, who has a career spanning more than three decades in the Hindi film industry, recently completed his 100th film in the Industry. The actor has given some iconic performances over the years. One of them was the 1998 film, Satya, where he played the unforgettable role of 'Bhiku Mhatre.' The role was the talk of the town. In a recent interview with Sushant Sinha for his YouTube channel, Manoj revealed some exciting details about the BTS activities of the film.
Satya was supposed to be produced by T-series founder, Gulshan Kumar. However, his assassination in 1997 shook the industry and delayed the film. Several rumours were suggesting the alleged role of Mumbai Mafia in the assassination. Incidentally, the film's storyline was also linked with them. As a result, the makers faced difficulty securing financial banking, which caused a frustrating delay in shooting. Recalling the incident, Manoj said:
“Gulshan Kumar was murdered five days after we began shooting. The film was halted because the producer got scared. Gulshan Kumar’s murder was a huge incident in the industry, and we were making a movie about the Mumbai mafia. The producer got so scared he shut it down. Our careers, which were just about to begin, were brought to an abrupt halt.”

There are instances where a delayed film gets shelved in the film industry and the team faces a loss. So, the lack of financial backing after Gulshan Kumar's death brought a period of uncertainty for Manoj Bajpayee and the rest of the film's team. However, they gave it their best when they received the news that the shoot was restarting. Satya's commercial success and popularity prove that the crew's hard work paid off. Manoj was quoted as saying:
“After about a week, Ram Gopal Varma found Bharat Shah (financer). And then filming began again. We gave Satya our all. That one week was tough for us all. None of us had any idea what to do. Satya was our only hope. That uncertainty was very depressing and frustrating. I had decided that I would not lose hope until Ram Gopal Varma says, 'It's over. This film won't be made now.' But he never said that, he would only say that we’re pausing temporarily. After eight days, we got the good news that we are restarting the film.”
T-series, one of India's most prominent music labels and production companies, was founded by Gulshan Kumar. He was shot dead on August 12, 1997, outside a temple in Jeet Nagar in the Juhu, Mumbai. The police arrested three attackers who had shot him 16 times. Later, investigations revealed the involvement of music composer, Nadeem Akhtar in the case. He allegedly hired the killers the assassination. However, before an action could be taken, he shifted to the UK and has since been acquitted.
