Mamta Kulkarni was once the shining star in Bollywood during the 90s and worked in big banner films. Her style and beauty impressed fans, but soon, the actress got involved in multiple controversies and gradually faded from fame. After staying away for a long time, she recently returned to the country and surprised fans by announcing she would join Kinnar Akhara and become a Mahamandaleshwar. However, in a quick turn of events, she has been removed from it.
On January 21, 2025, Rishi Ajay Das, who claims to be the founder of Kinnar Akhara, released a new statement and revealed that he had expelled Mamta Kulkarni from their Akhara. At the same time, Acharya and Transgender activist, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi from Juna Akhara, who supported her initiation, have also been removed on the charge of treason for bringing in the former Bollywood actress.
In his statement, Ajay Das mentioned that Mamta was given the title of Mahamandaleshwar without following proper akhara traditions. Consequently, he had to remove Mamta and Laxmi Narayan Tripathi. Rishi Ajay Das also mentioned that the latter took action against Sanatan Dharma by appointing Mamta Kulkarni to a post in their Akhara despite her past associations with the glamour industry and other controversies. As per ANI, he earlier said:
"By giving such a person the title of Mahamandaleshwar, what kind of guru are you offering to Sanatan Dharma? This is a question of ethics."
Mamta Kulkarni's entry in Kinnar Akhara gained at lot of limelight. Several members questioned her appointment and it forced the heads to step out and take a decision to avoid inner rift. But, even the new decision to remove the former actress and Acharya, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi has led to a debate between the heads of Akhara's as Mahant Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, challenged Rishi Ajay's authority. On the other hand, Transgender Kathavachak Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa questioned Mamta's appointment while speaking to ANI and said:
"Mamta Kulkarni has been made Mahamandaleshwar by the Kinnar Akhada for publicity. Society knows her past very well. She was even jailed in the past in connection with drug cases. Suddenly, she arrives in India, participates in the Maha Kumbh, and is given the position of Mahamandaleshwar. This needs investigation."
Mamta Kulkarni debuted with Tirangaa in 1992 and made a big breakthrough with the film, Aashiq Awara in 1993. Within 10 years, she worked in several films, including Karan Arjun, Baazi, Krantiveer, Waqt Hamara Hai, Sabse Bada Khiladi, and more. However, she also got linked in a drug case and made headlines due to her relationship with underworld don, Chhota Rajan in 1998. Gradually, her appearances in films decreased, and she left the country. Recently, after the re-release of her popular film, Karan Arjun, co-starring Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kajol, Mamta returned to India. She surprised fans after a video of her performing a pind daan at the Sangham Ghat in Prayagraj. She was later inducted into the Akhara with a new name and got the post of Mahamandaleshwar.
