Madhubala Was In A Relationship With Rishi Kapoor's Uncle Before Tragic Love Story With Dilip Kumar

It is none other than Rishi Kapoor’s maternal uncle, Premnath. Let us read on to know what exactly went wrong between them.

Madhubala’s affair with Premnath

It is reported that before Dilip Kumar came into her life, Madhubala was madly in love with actor, Premnath. The two were even contemplating marriage, but their different religious backgrounds led to their breakup. Madhubala and Prem Nath’s relationship lasted for six months as her father was not happy with their relationship.

Madhubala’s breakup with Prermnath

The final nail in the coffin struck when Prem Nath asked Madhubala to convert, resulting in the two parting ways. In an interview with ETimes, Madhubala’s sister, Madhur Bhushan, revealed the same and stated that the actress broke up with Premnath because of her father. Talking about the same, Madhur Bhushan stated:

“But in those days, Hindus and Muslims weren't getting married. Today, times have changed. My father objected to their relationship, saying that he was answerable to the family. It wasn't difficult for her. It was a short-lived relationship. Both wanted to pursue their career. It was like boy meets girl and they start dreaming about a future together.”

Madhubala’s tragic affair with Dilip Kumar

After her breakup with Prem Nath, Madhubala found love in Dilip Kumar's arms. She first met Dilip Kumar on the sets of Tarana (1951) and, from there, started the most talked about romance in the Indian film industry. The two dated for nine long years and had also exchanged rings with each other. 

Why did Madhubala never marry Dilip Kumar?

The iconic couple, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s breakup happened because of her father, Ataullah Khan. Madhubala signed a film, Naya Daur, and even shot it for 15 days. However, the director, B.R Chopra, changed the shooting location to Bhopal, and it didn't go well with the actress’ father. As she had denied completing the film, B.R. Chopra sued her. While Madhubala was firm with her father’s decision, Dilip Kumar had testified against them, contributing to their soured relationship. 

Madhubala would have married Dilip Kumar, if he would have said sorry to her father

The court case changed the equation between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s father. In an interview with the ETimes, Madhubala’s sister, Madhur Bhusan, revealed that her sister would have married Dilip Kumar if he had apologised to their father. In her words:

“Had the court case not happened, Madhubala would have probably got married to Dilip Kumar. She had urged Dilip saab to apologise to our father. She had tried to convince him to let bygones be bygones, just say one sorry for the sake of their relationship. Dilip saab refused.”

Madhubala and Dilip Kumar stopped speaking to each other during Mughal-e-Azam

Do you know that during the making of the iconic film, Mughal-e-Azam, Madhubala, and Dilip Kumar were not even on talking terms?  In his autobiography, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, the actor talked about his breakup with Madhubala and penned:

"Matters began to sour between us, thanks to her father's attempt to make the proposed marriage a business venture. The outcome was that half way through the production of Mughal-e-Azam, we were not even talking to each other. The classic scene with the feather coming between our lips, which set a million imaginations on fire, was shot when we had completely stopped even greeting each other."

The evergreen beauty, Madhubala was detected with a hole in her heart. On February 23, 1969, she breathed her last at the tender age of 36. As an obituary, Premnath wrote a poem dedicated to her.
