Priyanka Chopra's Mother, Madhu Chopra On Her Early Bollywood Experience: 'We Saw The Dirt... '

Dr Madhu Chopra, the mother of international superstar, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and the producer of Purple Pebble Pictures, recently engaged in a candid conversation about her journey, relationships, nepotism and parenting. In her conversion with Breaking Stereotypes on YouTube, Madhu Chopra recalled her experience when Priyanka Chopra, former Miss World 2000, made her debut in Bollywood.

Madhu Chopra discussed how Priyanka’s career affected them as a family

When Madhu Chopra was asked about her initial experience with Bollywood when Priyanka Chopra was starting her career in the industry, she described that the family couldn’t initially comprehend the extent to which the film industry and media could intrude on their personal lives. Talking about the role of media and paparazzi, Dr Chopra remarked:

“You see, journalism was a very respectable career. Now when you call them Paparazzi… they also should have some groundwork done, so that you don't intrude. you get your news, you get your chance to take pictures, you get your chance to get a quote few quotes all that is good but don't intrude. I don't like intrusive papery at all.”

Coming from a totally different background, the Chopra family did not know what to expect and had no idea how media attention could affect their lives. It took a toll on them with time when they started to notice negative things being circulated about their daughter. Madhu Chopra recalled how she discovered the ‘hell hole’ of Bollywood and the ‘dirt in it’. She said:

“Yes, to start with, we were very new, and we came from another industry. We were both doctors and film was absolutely new to us and we had stars in our eyes. I didn't think that it was a hell hole. Such negative things hadn't come to our heads. But when we actually came in, then we saw the dirt in it, the bad part.”

It wasn't easy for Madhu Chopra to get used to being in the limelight. However, as she witnessed Priyanka Chopra's undeniable talent and dedication, she grew increasingly confident in her daughter's abilities and eventually embraced the media attention that came with her success. She recalled:

“Thoda taqlif to hoti thi shuru shuru mein, then Priyanka sat us down and told us ‘Mom, you know me best, so why believe all rubbish?’ After that, everything became all right.”

Madhu Chopra also shared her views on nepotism, social media and family dynamics in India versus the Western world in the podcast.
