Maareesan, the much-talked-about Tamil comedy thriller starring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu, made a strong mark at the box office with its unique blend of sharp humour, emotional storytelling, and suspense. Directed by Sudheesh Sankar, the film brought together an unlikely duo that struck gold both critically and commercially. Audiences were drawn to its narrative, witty dialogues, and standout performances, making it one of the year's sleeper hits. After enjoying a successful theatrical run and generating buzz among fans and critics alike, Maareesan is now all set to make its digital debut, offering the film a second life on streaming for those who missed it in cinemas. Here’s all you need to know about Maareesan’s OTT release.
After a successful theatrical run, Maareesan, the comedy-thriller starring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu, is all set for its much-awaited OTT release. The film premiered on Netflix on August 22, 2025, and is available in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The streaming giant had confirmed the news on social media with a quirky caption, “Get in, guys, we are going to Thiruvannamalai. Watch Maareesan on Netflix, out August 22.”
Maareesan follows the story of ‘Dhayalan’, played by Fahadh Faasil, a crafty small-time robber who stumbles upon what seems like the perfect victim, an Alzheimer's patient with a heavy bank balance. His target is ‘Velayudham Pillai’, portrayed by comedy icon, Vadivelu, who initially appears to be a clueless and vulnerable man, but as ‘Dhayalan’ schemes to con this poor man, the two set off on a road trip that takes unexpected emotional and moral turns.
What starts as a shallow act of manipulation soon deepens into a surprising bond for the two men. ‘Dhayalan’ discovers hidden layers of ‘Velayudham’s’ past, forcing him to confront his own choices and humanity. The film masterfully balances comedy, suspense, and sentiment, making it a unique blend that’s hard to be placed down to a single genre.
Maareesan has a strong supporting cast that adds depth and charm to the story. Kovai Sarala plays the sharp and no-nonsense ‘Assistant Commissioner Fareeda’, while Vivek Prasanna appears as ‘Ganesh/Arun’, bringing intrigue to the plot. Sithara portrays ‘Meenakshi’, and Livingston delivers his usual flair as ‘Chaari’. P. L. Thenappan takes on the role of ‘Inspector Kanagaraj’, adding tension to the thriller aspect, while Renuka plays ‘Dhayalan’s mother. Directed by Sudheesh Sankar and written by V. Krishna Moorthy, Maareesan is produced by R. B. Choudary under the renowned Super Good Films banner.
