'Tommy Norris' can't catch a break, and it's only the second episode of Landman Season 2. While he is trying to plan his mother's funeral, the universe, his family, and coworkers keep yanking him into one mess after another. On the other hand, 'Cooper Norris' strikes oil gold but realises he has no idea what he is doing and calls his dad, 'Tommy', for backup, who can feel his senses go off about the company his son has gotten involved with.
And as if on cue, 'Tommy's' boss, 'Cami Miller' gets into legal trouble after her husband, 'Monty Miller's' demise, forcing the former to switch into crisis-manager mode with help from his M-Tex legal crew, 'Nate' and 'Rebecca Falcone'. And one would think that will be it. So wrong! As 'Tommy' goes to pick out his mother's casket, 'Sheriff Walt Joeberg' informs him that his ex-wife, 'Angela Norris', and his daughter, 'Ainsley Norris', have been arrested. So, as 'Tommy' tackles the odds, let's see how he even landed himself in such a mess.
'Cooper' is determined to follow in his father, 'Tommy's' footsteps and become a 'Landman'. However, after six of his wells hit major oil in West Texas, saying that he's shocked would be an understatement. However, his excitement is met with a surprising reaction from his girlfriend, 'Ariana'. For the unversed, 'Ariana' lost her husband and the father of her infant son in an oil rig explosion in Season 1.
While 'Ariana' and 'Cooper' formed an unexpected connection, the grief she's been carrying hasn't gone anywhere. So when 'Cooper' suggests that his sudden wealth could help them "move off and start a new life with no worries," she immediately recoils. Leaving 'Cooper' with no choice but to find somewhere else to live. She was quoted as saying:
"I don't think we should do this anymore. I thought I lost you, too, for four hours with panic burning through like acid. I guess that means I do love you. I don't want to shop for a new house. I like this one, my husband died for it. I have friends here, I don't want to trade them for new ones. I'm so glad your dream came true, but being rich isn't my dream. It's yours."
After successfully drilling six wells, 'Cooper' finally loops in his father for advice. That's when it's revealed that the young landman has partnered with an Odessa-based company, Sonrisa, to finance each well, a project that costs roughly USD 48 million. 'Cooper' explains to 'Tommy' that "They finance spec wells 50-50 till recoup, then 18 per cent after that," before admitting he never had a lawyer review the contract.

'Tommy' is wary of any company willing to bankroll a venture of that size without asking for collateral. Seeking answers, 'Tommy' reaches out to M-Tex's in-house attorney, 'Nate', to dig into Sonrisa. And they soon discover that the fund manager and founder behind the LLC is none other than cartel boss, 'Galino'. In the final minute of Season 2 Episode 2, 'Tommy' is heard saying:
"That's your new partner, and it's a real f------ problem, son,"
At the end of Landman Season 1, 'Gallino' is introduced as a powerful cartel boss, who saves 'Tommy' from being tortured and killed by a rival faction, but the rescue isn't an act of kindness but a calculated move. The cartel boss wants to pivot his cartel's power into the oil business and sees 'Tommy' and M-Tex as valuable partners rather than enemies.
After freeing him, 'Galino' proposes that they "coexist," essentially opening the door to a business relationship. While 'Tommy' understands the danger in aligning with a cartel boss, he also recognises 'Galino's' intelligence and the influence he wields. Their dynamics become a strategic arc, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, as 'Galino' offers opportunity and protection. At the same time, 'Tommy' tries to manage the risks of working with someone he can never fully trust.

While out on a run in Fort Worth, 'Cami' is blindsided with legal papers notifying her of a lawsuit between M-Tex and their insurance provider, Blanton. Without the knowledge of the same, a gas well blows off the coast of Louisiana, and before 'Monty's' death, M-Tex received a USD 420 million settlement from Blanton. The policy required that the payout be used to drill another offshore well, but the entire sum was given upfront rather than reimbursed as expenses were incurred.
M-Tex's lawyers and 'Tommy' suspect 'Monty' had redirected those funds into other drilling projects. However, as Blanton pushes to take the matter to trial, and calls a meeting. 'Rebecca' manages to steer them away from litigation by agreeing that M-Tex will move forward with drilling a new ocean well.
As 'Tommy' plans his mother's funeral, takes a look into 'Cooper's' questionable business deal, and is neck deep into M-Tex's mounting legal troubles, the universe throws him another curveball. 'Angela' and 'Ainsley' are busy volunteering at a local nursing home, something they do several times a week. However, during their visit, two inspectors from Texas Health and Human Services arrive unannounced and catch the two women serving the residents alcohol, and things quickly go sideways.

While 'Angela' gets defensive, things get out of hand when one of the inspectors tries to force her into a chair physically. She pushes back hard enough that the police are called. 'Sheriff Walt Joeberg' FaceTimes 'Tommy' to show him his ex-wife and daughter handcuffed outside the nursing home. 'Tommy' immediately tells him to release them, insisting 'Angela' acted in self-defense and threatens legal action if they're not let go.
