The drama surrounding the controversial romantic escapades of former Arizona senator Krysten Sinema has grabbed a lot of attention recently. For those unaware, Heather Lynne Ammel, the estranged wife of Sinema's former security guard, Matthew Joseph Ammel, filed a lawsuit in North Carolina earlier this year, accusing Sinema of being the "homewrecker" in their marriage. The situation dramatically escalated after Sinema herself acknowledged that she and Matthew had a intimate affair while he was still married to Heather.
With new information from the court filings surfacing in connection to the case, the public scrutiny has intensified, especially after discovering that a former member of Sinema's security team had raised concerns about the ex-lawmaker's non-professional tendencies towards multiple men in her security team.

The controversy mainly stems from a lawsuit that Army veteran Matthew Joseph Ammel's estranged wife, Heather Lynn Ammel, filed in court on January 13, 2026. The suit accuses Krysten Sinema, 49, (third party) of contributing to the breakdown of Matthew and Heather's marriage under North Carolina's "alienation of affection" law, also known as the "homewrecker" statute.

Under this civil tort, the spouse can sue a third party for deliberately interfering in their marriage and causing the loss of love and affection. While this is not necessarily a criminal charge, it allows the spouse to seek monetary damages for the loss only if the plaintiff can present enough evidence supporting the claims. In the Ammel lawsuit, Heather is seeking at least USD 75,000 for the emotional distress, reputational harm to Matthew Ammel, and the loss of marital affection caused by Sinema's affair.

Adding to the drama, a former head of security's claims have raised more red flags about Sinema's intentions. The Ammel lawsuit cites claims involving Vrindavan Bellord, the sister of Tulsi Gabbard, the current U.S. Director of National Intelligence in Donald Trump’s administration. Bellord served as the former senator's head of security till late 2023 and was a colleague of Matthew Ammel. According to the filing, Bellord resigned from her role in late 2023 after allegedly expressing concerns about Sinema's intimate involvement with "other security members".

While the claims remain to be independently verified, the lawsuit states that Bellord had even encouraged Matthew Ammel to leave the security detail with her at the time, but the latter allegedly chose to stay, citing the financial security of his position. The lawsuit mentions:
“She encouraged Mr. Ammel to leave with her, but Mr. Ammel decided to stay due to the financial security of the job.”

In new legal filings obtained by the court on March 13, 2026, the former senator acknowledged that her relationship with Matthew Ammel eventually became intimate in mid-2024. The 49-year-old even provided some detailed accounts of a half-dozen locations where she and Ammel had intimate encounters, including California, New York City, Washington, D.C., Aspen, and Phoenix. While she admitted to having sexual relations with the Army veteran, she claimed to have those relations in places where the statute does not apply.
That's not all. The former senator is now asking a federal judge to dismiss Heather's lawsuit, arguing that she had little connection to North Carolina, where the "homewrecker" statute applies. She claimed that she didn't even know that Matthew Ammel lived in North Carolina with his wife and children until late 2023. Sinema stated in her filings:
“I did not learn that Mr. Ammel resided in North Carolina, and lived there with his wife and children, until approximately December 2023. He introduced me to his wife that month in Las Vegas, Nevada, following a U2 concert I acquired tickets for them to attend.”

Before he became a part of the former senator's security team, Matthew Ammel served in the military, after which he had to deal with several health challenges from service-related injuries. He was married to Heather Ammel for about 14 years before they separated in late 2024. Matthew and his estranged wife reportedly have three children together, and Heather had allegedly discovered explicit photos being exchanged between her husband and Sinema through a private application called Signal.

Matthew Ammel reportedly joined Krysten Sinema's security team in April 2022 after connecting with her head of security. According to campaign records obtained by news outlets, the military veteran was paid around USD 121,000 for his role through Sinema's campaign and related political action committee. In addition, he received roughly USD 6,800 in reimbursements to cover travel and other security-related expenses.
With Sinema's response to the Ammel lawsuit, her infamous affair with her former security guard has sparked national attention. For now, the lawsuit remains ongoing, and a federal judge will decide whether the case proceeds or is thrown out.
