Kriti Sanon Calls Out The Gender Pay Gap And Unwillingness Of Producers To Back Female-Led Films

Riding high on the success of her back-to-back films, Kriti Sanon has been a center of attention in Bollywood. After a string of films that didn't perform well at the box office, Kriti has dominated the industry this year with her recently released movies, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and Crew. The film earned praise from critics and fans alike, along with a good run at the box office. The versatile actress has always been candid in her interviews, and this time, she revealed shocking details of the gender pay gap in Bollywood.

Kriti Sanon addressed the pay parity in Bollywood

Kriti Sanon recently gave an interview to Film Companion, where she shared her inability to understand why some of her male co-stars get paid ten times more than her. Despite working in the industry for ten years now, she hasn't been able to draw the same or nearly identical income as many of her male co-stars. The Mimi actress said:

"The difference in payment (between male and female actors') currently is huge for no reason. Sometimes, you feel like it's not like that person has given a hit in 10 years, then why is he getting paid 10 times."

Unequal pay isn't the only issue that has left the actress thinking. She highlighted how the producers' unwillingness to allocate higher budgets for female-lead films is another bothersome issue. Kriti revealed that producers were unsure in providing budgets for her last movie, Crew. It featured three A-list actresses like other similar comedies with three male leads. However, those films with male leads didn't face the same issue that highlights the bigger problem of inequality in Bollywood.

The long-standing problem of gender pay disparity in Bollywood

Kriti expressed her disappointment on how the situation has stayed the same over time. Before this project, another female-led film, Veere Di Wedding, was in a similar situation and was backed by Rhea Kapoor and Ektaa Kapoor. They are the same set of producers who invested in Crew. Rhea Kapoor's sister and actress, Sonam Kapoor stated in an interview that her co-stars, like Kareena Kapoor Khan, had to accept pay cuts to maintain a manageable budget for their film, Veere Di Wedding
