Kristi Noem's Extramarital Affair With Corey Lewandowski, Blanket Row, 220 Million USD Campaign

Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, was recently fired following intense scrutiny over her alleged extramarital affair with top aide Corey Lewandowski. There had been a lot of rumours about her ‘open-secret’ affair. But all hell broke loose when she was directly questioned about the same during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

During the dramatic testimony before Congress, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.) asked Noem directly about her extramarital affair, but her response to the same doomed her. Noem was asked by Kamlager:

“At any time during your tenure as director of the Department of Homeland Security, have you had sexual relations with Corey Lewandowski?"

However, Noem didn’t refuse the allegations with a ‘no’ and instead dismissed the question as ‘tabloid garbage.” Her husband, Bryon Noem, who had been seated just behind her at the hearing, left the room right before the question was asked. Amid the grilling, Noem refused to deny the accusation, which led to Kamlager Dove grill her further as she asked:

“It is OK for you to be offended by the question. But it is a real question and you should be able to answer the question clearly and without any hesitation if someone is asking if you or any federal official is sleeping with their subordinate.”

Despite the repeated questions, Noem refused to deny the alleged affair with Corey Lewandowski. Noem kept repeating the question was “absolute garbage,” while Kamlager-Dove continued to say the matter was about Noem’s “judgment and decision making”. Kamlager-Dove emphasised that since Noem’s job is protecting the country. Her alleged affair could be a possible threat to national security.

When Kamlager-Dove asked Noem why she made Corey Lewandowski her de facto chief of staff, who possesses an unchecked level of power at DHS, Noem had no answer. Noem didn’t directly refuse to answer questions on her s**ual allegations with Lewandowski, which became the final nail in the coffin. A source told the Post, “The question about the affair at the hearing was actually the final straw.”

Missing blanket controversy

A Coast Guard pilot was reportedly fired by Noem in May 2025 over a missing blanket. The particular incident came to light after Noem’s name was dragged into several controversies. It was reported that Lewandowski entered the cockpit of a government jet in search of a missing blanket that belonged to Noem. The blanket was left behind after the pair switched aircraft when their original plane broke down. The report also stated that there was a mystery bag which contained some embarrassing content.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, in another exchange, followed up by Kamlager-Dove’s question and told Noem that he had a gift for her. Moskowitz showed her the blanket, which went missing from the government plane, that led to the Coast Guard pilot’s firing. The plane incident became a point of ridicule during the hearing.

220 million USD campaign row

While the affair allegations were a significant factor, reports emerged that the DHS spent USD 220 million on ads promoting immigration policies, which majorly featured Noem. As she faced scrutiny for spending taxpayers’ money on self-promotion, Noem put the entire onus on President Donald Trump and claimed that he had approved it. Trump not just denied the allegations but also got infuriated by Noem’s lie about him.

After Kristi Noem’s dismissal, Corey Lewandowski is also expected to depart from his role at DHS.
