The Oscars are the most prestigious award in the global cinema landscape, and every filmmaker and their team always dreams to achieve it. Several excellent films from India have long tried to take the renowned award home but haven't been successful yet. As the efforts continue, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, has become India's official entry for the Oscars in the Foreign Film category for 2025. Although, the journey to win the award ahead is long, the team of Laapataa Ladies are inspired by the news. In a new interview, Kiran Rao shared her excitement over the same.
Kiran Rao directed one of the most loved films of 2024, Laapataa Ladies. The film follows the story of two rural Indian brides who get swapped during a train ride with their new husbands. Further, on the journey, they learn some important lessons and find their voice. It was produced by Kiran's ex-husband, Aamir Khan's production company, and Jio Studios.

To secure the nomination, it has beaten 29 prominent films like Srikanth, Thangalaan, Ullozhukku, Vaazhai, Animal, and more. Kiran Rao expressed her excitement in an interview with CNN-News18 and shared that she was delighted to receive the news because she wanted its message to spread to more people and expressed her gratitude. The filmmaker revealed that her ex-husband, Aamir, contacted her with the news and shared his happiness. She said:
"I am extremely happy. We all were excited when we got the news. We want to spread awareness and get more and more people to watch this. This movie has a message for people of all ages. I would like to thank the people. Aamir Khan messaged me and congratulated everyone once this news came in. We would like to thank our team for the efforts they put in and the audience for the love they have given us."
When the news about Laapataa Ladies's selection came out, its team shared an official statement, and actors described their satisfaction. Reacting to the news, Aamir mentioned that he is proud of Kiran Rao and her team for securing the nomination and shared that he hopes to win the award. He said:
"We are all so happy with the news. I am so proud of Kiran and her entire team. I would like to thank the selection committee of the Film Federation of India, which chose our film to represent India at the Oscars. My heartfelt gratitude to our audience, our media, and the entire film fraternity, for all the love and support they have given Laapata Ladies."
For the unversed, a couple of other films from Aamir Khan's production company have been India's official entry to the Oscars. It includes Lagaan in 2001 and Taare Zameen Par in 2007. However, Lagaan is the only Indian film that has made it to the top five nominations at the 74th Academy Awards. Interestingly, Aamir first met Kiran Rao, who worked as an assistant director on the film before they tied the knot.
