Kiran Rao has been at the receiving end of appreciation after directing the famous Netflix movie, Laapataa Ladies. Despite her divorce from actor, Aamir Khan, the former couple share a cordial bond. They even worked together and Aamir produced Laapataa Ladies that Kiran admitted helped her to rediscover herself. Recently, Kiran Rao appeared on the Faye D'Souza Show, where she opened up about her divorce from Aamir and their present bond.
Kiran Rao tied the knot with Aamir Khan in December 2005. After their marriage, the couple was admired by fans for their chemistry. However, they announced their divorce in July 2021. Kiran revealed that she and Aamir Khan needed different things in life. So, she thought separating from him would make her happy, which has been true. She was quoted as saying:
"I feel relationships need to be redefined from time to time because we change as human beings as we grow. We need different things and this (divorce) is what I felt would make me happy and has made me very happy, honestly."

Kiran Rao added that she was single for a long time before getting married to Aamir Khan. During those years, she used to be happy living independently. However, there was a feeling of loneliness in her life back then. But now, after the divorce, she doesn't feel lonely because her son accompanies her. In addition, she has the support of two families that have made it a 'happy divorce' for them.
In the same interview, Kiran Rao said that ending their marriage was not easy for her and Aamir. So, they took some time to prepare mentally for it. In addition, she didn't fear taking the decision of divorce because she shared a strong bond with Aamir. The couple have a son, Azad, who was born in 2011, and the ex-couple is co-parenting him. In her words:
"We needed to be secure in the fact that we are not going anywhere, we are there for each other for the long term. It's just that we don't have to be married. I felt secure that I would be able to have my independent, individual time to myself and my life ahead without losing, for instance, the love of a partner, the security, and comfort of knowing that Azad's dad is also my friend, and is also my family."

Despite their separation, the ex-couple continues to work together and are often seen accompanying each other at different events. Kiran mentioned that her bond with Aamir is so strong that they don't need a paper or a title to define it. She added that there is a lot of love, respect, laughs and history between them, and she does not want to lose it.
