Katy Perry And Taylor Swift Once Had 'Bad Blood', 5 Year Feud, Snarky Taunts, And A Common Ex BF

Taylor Swift has a long list of celebrities with whom she has feuded. From Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Scooter Braun, and Nicki Minaj, the singer and songwriter has had beef with many stars. However, Taylor and Katy Perry's five-year-long spat has been recorded in pop-culture history as one of the most iconic feuds. Both the globally acclaimed top pop stars of the generation engaged in a lot of taunts against each other. Here's a look at that.

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry's feud started in 2014 with Bad Blood

One of the most popular songs of Taylor Swift's discography, Bad Blood is reportedly about Katy Perry. In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stones, Taylor said that the music video was about a woman in the industry who would, for years, subtly insult her backstage during award shows. Then Taylor said that the same person did something very horrible and tried to hire back-up dancers from under her to 'sabotage' a tour. Taylor shared:

"And it wasn't even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I'm surprisingly non-confrontational—you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So, now I have to avoid her. It's awkward, and I don't like it."

After this interview of Taylor Swift was published, Katy Perry made a tweet supposedly calling Taylor Swift 'Regina George', the antagonist of Mean Girls. In another interview, Katy answered speculations about the tweet and said that if someone defames her character, then they would be hearing about it. Katy's tweet read:

"Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing..."

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry's online spat fires up with Nicki Minaj's tweet

Nicki Minaj took to her X (then Twitter) account and wrote a tweet that implied that only music videos 'celebrating slim bodies' were nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards. Taylor, whose Bad Blood MV was nominated, took the comment personally and fired back:

"I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot."

Nicki later clarified that the tweet wasn't meant for the Fearless singer. They later made up as well. However, in the meantime, without mentioning Taylor, Katy made another scathing remark on her social media. She wrote:

"Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman..."

Taylor Swift denies implying that Bad Blood was about Katy Perry

In an interview with GQ, Taylor Swift said that she had not pointed her finger in a specific direction while talking about her song Bad Blood. She also said that the song was about losing a friendship. Taylor also said that she didn't want people to assume it was about her ex-boyfriend and target him even though she is on good terms with him. Taylor shared:

"You're in a Rolling Stone interview, and the writer says, 'Who is that song about?' And you sit there, and you know you're on good terms with your ex-boyfriend, and you don't want him to think you're firing shots at him. So you say, 'That was about losing a friend.' And that's basically all you say. But then people cryptically tweet about what you meant. I never said anything that would point a finger in the specific direction of one specific person, and I can sleep at night knowing that."

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry both dated John Mayer at different times

Taylor Swift was in a relationship with John Mayer in 2009, which ended in 2010 on bad terms. She even wrote a song called Dear John which detailed a problematic relationship between a young girl and an older man. During their relationship, Taylor was 19 and John was 32. Katy Perry and John Mayer were together from 2012 to 2015 in an on-and-off relationship. This timing coincided exactly with the feud between Taylor and Katy. Hence, many have speculated that the real reason for their rivalry was their common ex. However, Taylor has often said that it wasn't about a guy.

Katy Perry reveals her side of the story about the back-up dancers

The interview about the back-up dancers that started it all, Katy finally responded to that in 2017 on James Corden's Late Late Show. She said that three of her backup dancers had asked her if they could join Taylor Swift's tour. Katy responded that they can since she wasn't in a recording cycle. The Roar singer then also advised them to put a contingency period in their contracts so that they can join her if they want to when she goes for her recording cycle in the next year. Talking about what happened next, Katy said:

"So that year came up, right? And I texted all of them because I'm very close with them and I said, 'Look, just FYI, I'm about to start. I want to put the word out there.' They said, 'Okay, well we're gonna go and talk to management about it.' And they did, and they got fired."

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift made up in 2019

After dissing each other in music videos such as Swish Swish and Look What You Made Me Do, both Katy and Taylor made up in 2019. Katy took to her Instagram and posted a photo of cookies with 'Peace at last' written on it and tagged Taylor. Katy also had Taylor feature in her You Need To Calm Down music video, where they both hugged it out. As of now, peace has prevailed on both sides, with Katy supporting Taylor's recent album, The Life of Showgirl
