Katrina Kaif Opens Up On Her Skin Colour And Connection To India, Netizen Says, 'Very Demeaning'

Bollywood actress, Katrina Kaif was born to a British businessman of Kashmiri descent, Mohammed Kaif and his English lawyer and charity worker wife, Suzanne Turcotte. However, when she was a child, her parents divorced, and Mohammed Kafi moved to the US. As a result, Katrina and her seven siblings were raised by their mother, Suzanne. And due to her south Asian genes, Katrina was comparatively born with a darker skin tone and black hair than her other siblings. Thus, in an old interview, the actress opened up about the same and revealed how this connected her to India. But her comment on colour tone, irked the netizens, and they brutally trolled her.

Katrina Kaif talking about her dark skin tone

On March 6, 2023, a Reddit user shared an old interview of Katrina Kaif, wherein she talked about her dark skin, on its social media handle. In the video, the interviewer, Barkha Dutt asked the actress whether the absence of her father, Mohammed Kafi during her growing-up years, diminished her belongingness towards India. To which, Katrina explained how her dark skin tone just somehow fit the Indian complexion. Katrina also explained how she was always termed as an exotic or ethnic child. Katrina can be heard as saying:

"Probably it may sound very stupid. You know you must have seen enough and your friends, how you have a dark children who grew up to be fair. I was a very dark child so there was no way that you would look at me and say this is a Caucasian child. I was always viewed upon as oh how exotic or how ethnic."

Further, in the same conversation, Katrina compared herself with the citizens of the predominantly white-skin-toned countries and mentioned how belongingness to India was instilled in her. She elaborated that after travelling to several countries due to her mother's work, she lacked a sense of belongingness to India. Still, she never felt the same connection as she had with this nation, anywhere else on this earth. She added:

"So I was always aware of that and in some case I think I lacked a sense of belonging because we travelled to so many countries and by coincidence those countries were the first, Hong Kong, China, Japan, France, very very predominantly white fair Caucasian countries so that I think it instilled in me more which is probably why when I came to India maybe other people would have gotten afraid, maybe they would have said I can't just come to your country and land up here. But probably for me I felt such a sense of belonging because I realised that I don't know that it just fit somehow."

Katrina gets trolled for her comment on dark skin

As soon as the old video of Katrina's interview surfaced on Reddit, netizens started questioning her comment. While some mentioned that Katrina was lying about her skin tone, some called her comment extensively racist. Katrina Kaif's background

Talking about Katrina Kaif's education, she and her seven siblings- three elder sisters, Stephanie, Christine, and Natasha; three younger sisters, Melissa, Sonia, and Isabel; and an elder brother named Sebastien were home-schooled by a series of tutors. This was because their mother, Suzanne Turquotte is a social activist and they had to relocate to a number of countries for varying periods of time. Afterwards, at the mere age of 14, Katrina won a beauty contest in Hawaii and also grabbed her first modelling assignment in a jewellery campaign. This is how she began her modelling career, and for the same, she lived in London for 4 years, before finally moving to India. However, she has always felt the emptiness of a father figure in her life. In her 2019 interview with Filmfare, Katrina was heard as saying:

"Not having a father figure does create a certain vacuum and makes any girl feel vulnerable. When I have kids, I want them to have the experience of being with both parents. Each time I've gone through something emotionally hard, I was compelled to reflect that it must be nice for those who have a strong fatherly support from a male figure, who loves you unconditionally."
