Karwa Chauth is an Indian Hindu festival that falls in the Hindu month of Kartik. It comes on the fourth lunar day of the fortnight and is also known as Karak Chaturthi. The festival holds a deep meaning in the lives of married Indian women. On this day, married women observe a nirjala vrat and refrain from consuming food or drinking water after sunrise for the entire day. However, there is some confusion related to the date, so let's read on to find out when you should celebrate the festival.
The Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated with great fervour by married women for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. They are seen observing fasts from dawn to dusk, and then, after the moonrise, they break their fast. Chauth Mata is also worshipped on this auspicious day. According to a Times of India report, the Karwa Chauth tithi will begin on October 9, 2025, at 10:54 p.m. and will end on October 10, 2025, at 7:38 p.m. Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 10, 2025. The Karwa Chauth Puja Muhurat will begin at 5:57 pm and end at 7:11 pm, and the Karwa Chauth Upwas time is from 6:19 am to 8:13 pm. The moon will rise on Karwa Chauth Day at 8:13 p.m., and at that time, the fast needs to be broken.
Women break their fast by looking at the moon and then see the face of their husband via a sieve. October 10, 2025, which is a Friday, is the day and date when Karwa Chauth will be celebrated. The confusion in the dates has come because of Chaturthi, which goes for two days in 2025, according to a NDTV report. The vrat is observed on the day when the tithi of Chaturthi is actually active, and hence Karwa Chauth will with pomp on October 10, 2025.
Karwa Chauth is celebrated with the belief that Goddess Parvati observed a fast to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Hence, married women observe the same for the long lives of their husbands, also so that they have an enduring marriage. The fast is also said to bring good luck and prosperity to the family. The festival is fully dedicated to Chauth Mata also called as Gauri Mata and is observed by married ladies. The one-day festival is celebrated mainly in the northern parts of India, which include Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Married Hindu women are seen praying to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Karwa Mata and also Lord Ganesha for their husbands.
Well, on one side, married women are seen fasting from dawn to dusk and then breaking the fast when the moon rises. On the other side, there is a trend of unmarried women also observing fast to get the perfect husband that they wish for. Women start preparing for the Karwa Chauth festival a day before and apply mehendi on their hands as well as feet, which symbolises good luck. Women wake up early and follow the sargi ritual before sunrise. They are seen taking a bath and wearing pretty attire like sarees, suits and other traditional attire. After the moon rises, they can eat or drink anything.
