It was in the year 2000 when Abhishek Bachchan had made his debut in Bollywood with J.P. Dutta's film, Refugee, opposite his ex-girlfriend, Karisma Kapoor's younger sister, Kareena Kapoor. He was tagged as the next big thing in the industry. However, more than his acting skills, Abhishek was in the news for his love story with Karisma.
In 2002, the nation was waiting for the Kapoors and the Bachchans to turn their dosti into rishtedaari with Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan's wedding. But unfortunately, in 2003, a shocking announcement of their engagement being called off abruptly had made everyone disheartened. Abhishek and Karisma had dated for five years. However, destiny had other plans for them.

When Karisma and Abhishek's engagement was called off, it affected Kareena and Abhishke's relationship too. In a throwback interview with Simi Garewal on her show, Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, Kareena Kapoor had opened up about her equation with Abhishek and had stated:
"In my life, there's still room for Abhishek Bachchan, I just wish there is a little bit of room still left in his heart for me."
Coming back to Abhishek and Karisma's love story, it was at his sister, Shweta Bachchan Nanda’s wedding in 1997 when sparks had flown between them, and they had soon started dating. Although they had managed to keep their relationship under the wraps for five years, in October 2002, on Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday celebrations, the announcement of Abhishek and Karisma’s engagement pleasantly surprised everyone. Karisma had then stated:
“It feels wonderful to be a part of this family.”

However, when their wedding was called-off abruptly, many speculations had cited the reasons behind the split. It was also rumoured that the real reason behind their sudden called-off wedding was because of Karisma's mother, Babita. It was reported that she wanted a stable and secure life for her daughters. Having undergone a tough phase after separation from Randhir Kapoor, Babita single-handedly raised her daughters, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor.
Another reason reported was the huge difference in Karisma and Abhishek's career graph. She had already established herself as one of the leading actresses of Bollywood, whereas, he was nothing more than Amitabh Bachchan's son. The Bachchans too were undergoing huge financial losses and to financially secure her daughter, Babita wanted a prenup to be signed, which was not accepted by Big B.
Post their breakup, Karisma Kapoor went on to marry Sanjay Kapur, a rich Delhi-based businessman on September 29, 2003. But they too had parted ways and were granted the divorce in 2016. Karisma is now a single mother to her two kids, Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Raj Kapoor. On the other hand, Abhishek Bachchan is happily married to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and they have a lovely daughter, whom they have named Aaradhya Bachchan.
Post two decades of their breakup, both Abhishek and Karisma are happy in their respective lives.
