Dharma Productions, owned by Karan Johar, has recently been in the news as Saregama India, part of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, is in early negotiations to acquire a majority stake. Additionally, KJo is reportedly in talks with another industry giant, according to a report from the Economic Times on October 14, 2024.
Negotiations are currently underway for Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to acquire a stake in Dharma Productions, though the exact amount at stake remains unclear. The report also mentioned that Karan Johar has been attempting to sell a significant portion of his Dharma holdings for some time. However, the process has not been smooth, as previous deals fell through due to valuation disputes.

According to the Economic Times story, Karan Johar owns 90.7% of Dharma Productions, while his mother, Hiroo Johar, owns 9.24%. If the agreement between Dharma Productions and Reliance Industries Limited goes through, it will significantly expand the latter’s entertainment portfolio. Currently, RIL supports Colosseum Media, Viacom18 Studios, and Jio Studios. Furthermore, Ektaa R Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms owns a 25% minority stake in RIL, which is owned by Mukesh Ambani.
Returning to Dharma Productions, Jigra, featuring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, has released in theaters. Karan Johar also owns Dharmatic Entertainment, which produces content for OTT platforms. On September, 2024, Call Me Bae, starring Ananya Panday, premiered on Amazon Prime Video.
