Karan Johar never shied away from admitting his past mistakes, especially when it revolved around the gender politics of his hit film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The filmmaker recently revealed how when he made the film, his only goal was to make a blockbuster so that the morale of his dad, Yash Johar was lifted as Yash struggled with a lot of flops.
Karan, in an interview with Lily Singh, shared that his dad, Yash was having a very low morale because of the five back-to-back flop films he had before Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was made. Karan's only goal was to make a blockbuster film for his dad so that his spirit was revamped. In his words:
"I just wanted to make a very big hit. I was 24 years old when I wrote Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and as a producer’s son, I grew up understanding box office business and how our country has a varied audience. I wanted to do this not for material reason but for prestige reason and my father to get his morale back."
Karan, going ahead, also shared that when he looks back at his first movie, he feels very proud of all the love it has received, but he also questions the gender politics, some of the dialogues, and the cringe moments. When he sees the movie now, he feels what was he thinking back then. In his words:
"I was young and new to cinema. I am allowed to make my mistakes,”
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai showed Kajol playing the role of a tomboy. Karan once in an interview with the Screen shared Shabana had blasted at him for making a film where Kajol's character was shown to be unattractive due to her short hair. Karan said:
"I remember (actress) Shabana Azmi saw the film somewhere in the UK and she called me. She was aghast. She told me, ‘what have you shown? That a girl has short hair, so she’s not attractive, and now her hair is long and she’s pretty? What do you have to say to this?’ I said I’m sorry. She said, what? That’s all you have to say?"
Going ahead in the interview, Karan shared that his late dad, Yash, had an array of failures, and Karan could not see that. He wanted to bring back the prestige of his father and said that his dad was a very loved man, but he was also a producer who had made a series of unsuccessful films—five back-to-back failures. He just wanted to make a big, monstrous hit for his dad and never thought of contributing to society or making a film that would make a difference or a politically correct thing that would be impressionable.
