Rishab Shetty's epic film, Kantara: Chapter 1, is currently enjoying a stellar theatrical run, boosted by the reputation of its first instalment, Kantara. It explores the mythological origins of a legendary protector in ancient Karnataka and is set approximately a thousand years before the events of the original film. The pan-Indian movie has been winning hearts with its impressive performances, witty storytelling and insane visual effects. The ones who will not be able to make it to the theatres to watch it are eagerly awaiting news of its OTT release, and here it is! Reportedly, the filmmakers have locked in its streaming platform and tentative release date, thrilling fans.
Kantara: Chapter 1 was released on October 2, 2025, and is a prequel to the highly successful 2022 film, Kantara. Like the first film, this instalment was written, directed by, and stars, Rishab Shetty. In the latest instalment, the film returns to the mystical forests of Kantara to tell the origin of the story of the divine spirits, or Daivas, Panjurli and Guliga, tracing the foundational lore of the original film. The story is set several centuries before the events of the first film, during the 4th century CE, when the Kadamba dynasty was in power.
The narrative unfolds in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka, where a tribal community lives in harmony with nature in a dense, mysterious forest. The plot is driven by a clash between the protector of the forest, a fierce warrior named 'Berme' (played by Rishab Shetty), and the tyrannical 'King Kulasekhara' (played by Gulshan Devaiah), who seeks to exploit the forest's resources. Like the first instalment, divine forces play a major role in the prequel as well.
According to a recent report by Pinkvilla, Amazon Prime Video has finalised the deal with the makers of Kantara: Chapter 1, regarding the takeover of the OTT streaming rights of the movie. Its online streaming will most likely commence within a month of its theatrical run, on October 30, 2025. The Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam versions of the mythological thriller are expected to be available sooner. The Hindi-dubbed version may have a later release, a few weeks after the movie arrives on the OTT platform.
Rishab Shetty's Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 grossed an estimated Rs. 60 crore net in India on its first day of release, October 2, 2025.
