Kangana Ranaut, often in the spotlight for her bold personality and unfiltered opinions, has opened up about the controversies that have plagued her career over the years. As an actress-producer known for her straightforward remarks and tendency to take a stand, Kangana recently shed light on how the words and actions of men in her life have unfairly defined her public image, overshadowing her work as an artist.
In a recent interaction with The New Indian, Kangana opened up about the changes and achievements in her personal life while promoting her recent release, Emergency, which follows the life of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Kangana shared that many of the controversies surrounding her have stemmed from what men said about her, calling it ‘unfair’ and ‘degrading’. Talking about why she chose not to focus much on Indira Gandhi’s personal life, Kangana shared:
“I think it's very degrading for a woman, to be labelled as ... For example, even I have seen even in my career as an actress, most of the time my controversy is what men said about me, somebody filed a case or somebody called me a witch or, somebody said something that took over my credibility as an artist. That's not fair”.
Her comments come in light of infamous incidents, including her long-term public disputes with Hrithik Roshan and allegations by ex-boyfriend, Adhyayan Suman, both of which made headlines for years.
Kangana and Hrithik’s feud has been one of the most publicised controversies of the actress’s career. It all started back in 2016 when Hrithik Roshan filed a legal complaint against Kangana, alleging that she was corresponding with someone impersonating Hrithik through a fake email ID. Meanwhile, Kangana maintained that Hrithik himself provided the email ID and that they had communicated through it for years. The high-profile spat dominated headlines for months, with both sides slamming each other, directly or indirectly.
Another major controversy of Kangana’s career involved her ex-boyfriend, Adhyayan. The two had been in a relationship from 2008 to 2009, and Adhyayan accused Kangana of emotional and physical abuse. He had even alleged that Kangana made him perform bizarre rituals, including one where she allegedly made him drink her period blood. This controversy further fueled the polarising perception of Kangana in the media.

While controversies may have attempted to tarnish her image, Kangana continues to rise above the noise. Her latest directorial venture, Emergency, focuses on the life of former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Drawing parallels between her experiences with that of Indira Gandhi, Kangana remarked:
“While I was doing research for the film... I was appalled. I said ‘Why is a woman limited to the men she has encountered in her life, in whatever capacity?’ It was very wrong. I have taken special care of not even going into that direction, and strictly looking at her as a Prime Minister and what she did and what she could not, where she rose and what she messed up as a story”.
