Kalpana Saroj is the CEO of Kamani Tubes, one of India's leading firms that deals in the manufacturing of copper and copper alloy products. In the Indian business sector, Kalpana's entrepreneurial success story is right up there at the top. So many critics in the business world have labelled Kalpana as a "Slumdog Millionaire", courtesy of her journey from being born in a Dalit family to becoming a successful business tycoon.

According to several media reports, Kalpana Saroj has an estimated net worth of Rs. 917 crores. However, what's inspirational is that she once worked in a garment factory for just two rupees. Kalpana Saroj was born in 1961 into a Dalit community in Akola, Maharashtra. Her father was a police constable and knew that education was important for a girl. As a result, he made sure that Kalpana went to school.

When Kalpana Saroj turned 12, she was forcefully married to a person from her community. Due to marriage, Kalpana quit her schooling and started fulfilling the duties of a married woman at the mere age of 12. According to several reports, Kalpana Saroj faced domestic violence in her marriage and even faced severe torture from her in-laws, who treated her like a maid.

Things went completely downhill for Kalpana Saroj in her marriage as she lost so much weight due to the trauma that her husband and his parents were giving her. Luckily, one day, her father paid a surprise visit to his daughter's house, and he was shocked to see Kalpana's condition. The police constable was smart enough to understand everything, and he immediately took his daughter out of that messy and traumatic marriage.

After returning to her maternal home, Kalpana Saroj started working on her mental and physical well-being. She soon moved to Mumbai in search of work and started working at a garment factory for just two rupees. It was in 1984 when Kalpana decided to do something big in her life, and she started her tailoring business by taking a loan of Rs. 50,000. She also invested some money in the furniture business and started receiving huge profits from it. As a result, she established her own production house under the name KS Production.

It was in 2001 when Kamani Tubes approached Kalpana Saroj and asked her for help because the company was on the verge of liquidation. She took the challenge and purchased the company for Rs. 50 lakhs from Navinbhai Kamani. The company hadn't paid a single penny to its 3,500 workers for 3 years, but after Kalpana purchased the firm, she changed things quickly.

From making an entirely new business module to making some changes in manufacturing, Kalpana took Kamani Tubes to a point where it generated a revenue of Rs. 100 crores. Courtesy of her incredible entrepreneurial journey, despite having no professional degrees, she received the prestigious Padma Shri award in April 2013.
