Many Bollywood actresses leave a mark with their stellar performances and make a permanent place in people’s heart. Some find success, others struggle to make their presence felt. One such actress was Kajal Kiran, whose debut film was a blockbuster hit; however, despite this success, she was unable to establish a name for herself in the industry.
Born into a middle-class Marathi family in Mumbai, Kajal made her acting debut in 1977 with the film, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, opposite Rishi Kapoor. Her debut film was a blockbuster hit and became the third highest-grossing movie of the year. In 1980, she starred in Maang Bharo Sajana, opposite Jeetendra. Her second film too turned out to be a commercial success.
In a span of 14 years, Kajal starred in 40 Hindi films, as well as some Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam films. Despite her initial success, Kajal could never be in the league of top actresses of Hindi cinema. After some time, all her films bombed at box office and she was called a flop actress.
Although Kajal had a blockbuster debut, but Kajal didn’t get any benefits from it. After her debut film, Kajal didn’t get any film offers. The actress once blamed Rishi Kapoor for ruining her career as she was cast opposite Rishi in her debut film and all the limelight went to him. Rishi was one of the highest-paid actors of that time, and his romantic hero image stole the limelight from Kajal. The actress stated that it was Rishi who sabotaged her career.
When Kiran was shooting for Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, director Nasir Hussain asked her not to sign any other films until the results of her debut film were out. However, even after her debut film was declared a blockbuster, other filmmakers didn’t approach her as they thought that Kajal had signed a contract with Nasir. The actress lost many ambitious projects as a result. Apart from Rishi Kapoor, Kiran also blamed Nasir Hussain for not promoting her and only focusing on Rishi.
