Kader Khan was an all-rounder, a prolific actor, producer, and screenwriter. Hailed for his comic timing, he made his acting debut in 1973 with the film, Daag and has since appeared in 300 films. Before entering the film industry, he worked as a professor of civil engineering.

It was during one of his plays that comedian Agha noted Kader Khan, who suggested his name to Dilip Kumar. His career as a screenwriter began when he was asked to write the script of the film, Jawani Diwani in 1972. Do you know that Kader Khan was paid a hefty sum of one lakh twenty-one thousand rupees for writing the dialogues of the film, Roti in 1974?

Kader Khan’s comic roles in films like Dulhe Raja, Coolie No. 1, Saajan Chale Sasural, Judaai, Aunty No. 1, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Raja Babu, Anari No. 1 gained him a lot of attention and he became one of the most loved actors in the Hindi cinema.

Kader Khan’s fallout with Amitabh Bachchan

Kader Khan was popularly recognized for working with actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetndra, Anil Kapoor, and Govinda. However, the comedian, who once shared a great rapport with Amitabh Bachchan, went through a fallout with the actor. Kader Khan once addressed the issue and stated that he was unable to address Amitabh as ‘Sir ji’, which eventually soured their relationship.

In an old interview, Kader Khan opened up about their fallout and revealed an incident that changed their equation forever. Speaking about the same, Kader said:

“Main Amitji ko 'Amit, Amit' bolta tha. Ek producer ne mujhse aake kaha, 'Aap sir ji ko mila', south ka. Maine bola, 'Kaun sir ji?'. 'Aapko sir ji nahin maalum. That tall man'. Amitji aa rehe the waha se. Maine kaha, 'Woh toh Amit hai, sir ji kabse ho gaye. 'Hann, we will call him sir ji'. Aur sabne sirji bolna shuru kardiya tha.”

In the same interaction, Kader Khan revealed that since Amitabh was his good friend and the duo were contemporaries, he couldn’t call him sirji. In his words:

“Mere muh se nikla nahi sirji, aur sirji ka na nikalna main nikal gaya uss group se. Kya koi apne dost ko, apne bhai ko kisi aur naam se pukaar sakta hai? Namoomkin baat hai yeh. Main nahin kar saka aur shayad isliye mera unse woh raabta nahin raha. Isliye Khuda Gawa mein main nahi tha.”

Kader Khan and Amitabh Bachchan’s collaborations

Amitabh Bachchan and Kader Khan had collaborated for several films, including Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Do Aur Do Paanch (1980), Kaalia (1981), Satte Pe Satta (1982), Coolie (1983), Shahenshah (1988), Agneepath (1990), Hum (1991), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) and Sooryavansham.

Kadar Khan suffered from supranuclear palsy and was undergoing treatment in Canada. In 2018, the actor complained of breathlessness and passed away on December 31, 2018. After Kadar Khan’s death, Amitabh Bachchan penned an eulogy for him and tweeted:

“Kadar Khan passes away .. sad depressing news .. my prayers and condolences .. a brilliant stage artist a most compassionate and accomplished talent on film .. a writer of eminence; in most of my very successful films .. a delightful company .. and a mathematician!!”

Kader Khan was honoured with the Padma Shri posthumously.
