Jyotika is a stellar actress who has made a name for herself with her acting talents and elegance. However, despite having all the qualities of a brilliant actress, she has often faced casual sexism. Now, she had opened up about the same and revealed how it has often led to her doubting her own identity.
Jyotika sat for a conversation with News 18 Showsha, where she opened up about facing harsh discrimination in the industry for being a superstar, Suriya's wife. Despite being a phenomenal actress herself, Jyotika revealed that if she feels lucky to be Suriya's wife, people commend her husband for being a nice actor. However, if her husband, Suriya, feels lucky to have married Jyotika, people still commend him for thinking about his wife. She was quoted as saying:
"If I say that I feel lucky to have married Suriya, people say that he’s a really nice guy. If he says that he feels lucky to have married a nice woman, the conversation is once again like Suriya is such a nice guy that he’s thinking of his wife. Sometimes, it reaches a level where you may have an identity crisis. There are hundreds of instances that I can point out."
Jyotika, further in the conversation, pointed out how this discrimination pervades into various layers of one’s life. She revealed that being at the receiving end of this sexism can often lead to a woman having an identity crisis. She added that a woman's search for her identity leads to making a lot of decisions and choices. She was quoted as saying:
"A woman’s search for her identity also nudges one to make a lot of decisions and choices on their own. That’s also how I chose my career path."
For the unversed, Jyotika is preparing for the release of her Netflix special, Dabba Cartel, and has been actively promoting it. The film revolves around ordinary women finding themselves in the dark underbelly of drugs, guns, and mayhem. The actress' role in the film is reported to be similar to her own life in several sectors. Just like the actress quit the film industry at the peak of her career to take care of her family. In the film, Jyotika plays the role of a housewife of a business tycoon. The character will find their way back into the work sphere, albeit in a different space altogether.
Jyotika and Suriya first crossed paths during the shoot of Poovellam Kettuppar in 1999. Soon, feelings bloomed between the duo, and they dated for several years and worked in seven films together. They tied the knot on September 11, 2006, and share two children together, Diya and Dev.
