Hollywood love stories often come with a whole lot of glitz, glamour, and headlines, but very few stand the test of time. In an industry where marriages are often short-lived, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall’s partnership has defied the odds. Their bond, built on humour, respect, and a shared creative spark, has endured for nearly four decades, making them one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples.

From their first meeting as college students with a passion for comedy to building a life filled with family, career milestones, and unwavering support for one another, their journey feels almost cinematic in its own right. Together, they’ve been through the highs and lows of fame, health challenges, and the demands of public life, all while keeping their love at the centre of it all. Here’s a look at their complete love story.

Julia Dreyfus and Brad Hall met at Northwestern University

Julia Louis-Dreyfus first met Brad Hall while they were students at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in the early 1980s. Brad was already making a name for himself as a creative force on campus, producing shows with the Practical Theatre Company. Julia auditioned for one of those productions, and sparks quickly flew between them.

In a 2013 interview with Craig Ferguson, Julia admitted she felt an immediate connection. She recalled how smitten she had been with Brad, then a senior in her class. She fondly described him for his ‘big old beard and Jesus hair’. She said that she knew almost immediately he was the one for her.

In 1982, Julia and Brad’s shared comedic talent opened a new door for them. Both of them, along with their fellow Practical Theatre Company members, were hired to join the cast and writing team of Saturday Night Live. Julia, just 21 at the time, became the youngest female cast member in the show’s history. Although their time on SNL was relatively short-lived, it was a formative experience for both of them.

Julia Dreyfus and Brad Hall had a Santa Barbara wedding

On June 25, 1987, Julia and Brad married in Santa Barbara, California, not far from where Brad grew up. The ceremony carried extra significance as it was officiated by Brad’s father, who was a minister. Julia, who has joked about her '80s-inspired wedding dress being influenced by Princess Diana’s iconic gown, still looks back fondly at the day as the perfect start to their marriage.

Julia Dreyfus and Brad Hall’s parenthood journey and career highs

The 1990s brought both career success and new family milestones for the couple. Julia’s role as ‘Elaine Benes’ on Seinfeld made her a household name, while she and Brad settled into family life. In June 1992, they welcomed their first son, Henry Hall. Julia, then starring on Seinfeld, used oversized costumes to help hide her pregnancy on screen. Reflecting on it years later, she said those wardrobe choices helped her navigate the unique challenges of balancing motherhood with work.

Their second son, Charles (Charlie) Hall, was born in May 1997. Julia has been candid about how difficult it was to keep her pregnancies discreet while working in television, admitting she often craved hearty meals and put on more weight than she had expected but she later joked, that her pregnancy journey was all ‘documented on TV.’

By the early 2000s, Julia and Brad had firmly established themselves as a Hollywood couple who were admired for their lasting relationship. In interviews, they often talked about their early days together, laughing about how Julia was more focused on Brad than the skits they performed. The family also remained grounded despite Julia’s growing fame. Brad pursued his work as a writer, director, and producer, while Julia transitioned into new projects after Seinfeld.

Julia Dreyfus' Emmy win and career success came with Brad Hall by her side

The 2010s were marked by both professional triumphs and personal trials for the couple. Julia took on her acclaimed role as ‘Selina Meyer’ in HBO’s Veep, while Brad was often seen by her side at red carpet events and premieres. In September 2015, Julia celebrated her Emmy win with Brad, sealing the night with a celebratory kiss. Their love, as always, was on full display.

But the couple also faced hardship. In September 2017, Julia revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her public announcement struck a chord with many, as she reminded fans that one in eight women faces the same battle. Throughout her treatment, she credited her family, especially Brad and their sons, for providing her with the strength and support she needed.

Despite the challenges, the couple continued to celebrate milestones with humour and affection. Julia often posted throwback photos of their wedding on Instagram, marking each anniversary with heartfelt and often witty captions. In 2016, she wrote simply, “29 years ago today. A good choice.”

Julia Dreyfus and Brad Hall celebrated 34 Years of marriage

Marking their 34th anniversary in 2021, Julia once again turned to Instagram, posting photos of the two of them with the caption, “34 years in, keeping our head above water. Love and love to the love of my life.” The candid snapshot captured their enduring partnership, which has always been joyful, playful, and filled with affection.

At the NRDC’s Night of Comedy event in June 2022, Julia was asked about the secret to her long-lasting marriage. Her answer was simple ‘You gotta marry Brad Hall.’ That same month, the couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary by sharing a wedding photo and marvelling at how quickly the years had passed. She also revealed that her wedding dress had been heavily inspired by Princess Diana’s iconic gown, noting the oversized sleeves and lace.

During an episode of her podcast Wiser Than Me, Julia spoke more about her wedding attire. Though she joked about how ’80s it looked, she admitted that at the time she felt like ‘Cinderella at the ball.’ She also shared a touching detail about the ceremony, like hidden in her dress was a small stone-carved dolphin talisman, symbolising joy, which she had asked to be sewn into the gown. To this day, she doesn’t know exactly where it is in the fabric, and it remains a detail that she finds ‘fabulous.’

In February 2025, Julia and Brad attended SNL50, celebrating the sketch comedy show where their careers and love story arose from. It was a full-circle moment, reminding fans how their shared passion for comedy first brought them together more than four decades ago.

From college sweethearts to red carpet veterans, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall have built a relationship grounded in laughter, creativity, and unwavering support. They’ve celebrated professional highs, navigated health challenges, and raised a family together, all while keeping their bond strong.

After nearly 40 years of marriage, Julia sums it up best in her anniversary tributes that marrying Brad Hall was, indeed, ‘a good choice.’
