John Beam, who was in a critical condition after being shot at by an unknown assailant, had everyone praying for his well-being. However, tragic news regarding the ordeal has revealed that the legendary coach of Laney College has succumbed to the gunshot wound. Amid this unfortunate information, police have also revealed that a suspect has been apprehended. Here's what we know about John Beam's death and his suspected killer. 

John Beam dies at the age of 66 after being shot

On November 13, 2025, John Beam was shot in the head by an unknown assailant. The athletic director of Laney College was then rushed to the hospital. He was said to be in critical condition, with doctors trying their best. A spokesperson for Peralta Community College District had shared John's health update with AFP and said:

“The Peralta community is devastated by his shooting and deeply concerned for his well-being. We are stunned and heartbroken that such violence has touched our campus."

However, John Beam tragically passed away at the age of 66 after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. The mayor of Oakland, Barbara Lee expressed her remorse at the coach's life cut short and called a 'mentor and an educator of thousands of young people.'

Who is John Beam's suspected shooter, Cedric Irving Jr? 

According to the police, a suspect who was wearing dark clothes and a hoodie was apprehended in connection with the shooting of John Beam. The suspect was taken into custody around 3 AM on November 14, 2025 and has been identified as Cedric Irving Jr. He is said to be 27 years old and is a resident of Oakland. Additionally, the SF Chronicle has reported that Cedric has confessed to the crime, but a motive has not been revealed yet.

John Beam's legacy and his appearance in Last Chance U 

Amid his death, condolences have poured in with people remembering his legacy as a coach. It wouldn't be wrong to say that John had a Midas touch when it came to training his players. In fact, according to the college's website, around 20 of John Beam's students have made it to the National Football League. According to reports, he had joined the Laney College campus in 2004 as an assistant football coach. Then he rose in rank by becoming the head coach in 2012. John Beam also appeared in the Netflix documentary Last Chance U and became a well-known local celebrity. 

John Beam's family life

According to a Hindustan Times report, John Beam was married and had two daughters. He was also a loving grandfather to his two granddaughters. According to John's social media post, his father had served in the Navy, and his mother was of Korean descent. John also had one older sister, Sue. The Beam family is devastated by the death of their loved one and has released a statement that says:

“We are devastated that John Beam our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach mentor and friend has passed. Our hearts are full from the outpouring of support … we are deeply grateful for your continued prayers well wishes and thoughts."
