John Beam's Death, Last Insta Post Of 'Last Chance U' Coach Before Being Shot, A Tribute To His Dad

John Beam, the athletic director of Laney College campus, had a Midas touch when it came to training his players. Around 20 of his students have made it to the National Football League. He had also become a well-known local celebrity after being featured in the Netflix documentary, Last Chance U. However, in a painful twist of fate, John Beam was shot dead at the age of 66. Amid this, his last emotional Instagram post has gone viral. 

John Beam's last post before being shot was a tribute to his father on Veterans' Day 2025

According to one of John's social media posts on Father's Day, his dad had served in the Navy. Meanwhile, his mother was of Korean descent. On 11 November 2025, John shared a post wishing Veterans' Day to all and especially thanked his late father, who had served in the Navy. The photo John posted of his parents seemed to be from their wedding day. Unfortunately, just two days after the coach shared the photo, he would be shot by an unknown assailant on November 13, 2025 and succumb to his grievous injuries later. John's tribute to all the veterans and his late father read:

"Happy Veterans Day to all our veterans who have served and protected our Country. I want to especially thank my Dad for his service. 2 Claps Ready Ready. "

John Beam shot dead at the age of 66: Who is his suspected shooter, Cedric Irving Jr? 

On November 13, 2025, John Beam was shot in the head by an unknown assailant. The athletic director of Laney College was then rushed to the hospital. However, John tragically passed away at the age of 66 after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

According to the police, a suspect who was wearing dark clothes and a hoodie was apprehended in connection with the shooting of John Beam. The suspect was taken into custody around 3 AM on November 14, 2025 and has been identified as Cedric Irving Jr. He is said to be 27 years old and is a resident of Oakland. Additionally, the SF Chronicle has reported that Cedric has confessed to the crime, but a motive has not been revealed yet.

John Beam's legacy and his appearance in Last Chance U 

Amid his death, condolences have poured in with people remembering his legacy as a coach. According to reports, he had joined the Laney College campus in 2004 as an assistant football coach. Then he rose in rank by becoming the head coach in 2012. John Beam also appeared in the Netflix documentary Last Chance U and became a well-known local celebrity. Talking about his personal life, he was married and had two daughters. He was also a loving grandfather to his two granddaughters. John also had one older sister named Sue.
